Well.....I have seen a few of these posts in the past really get interesting, entertaining,  informative and sometimes downright weird.

Sooooo.  Let's here you tips,  tricks, remedies, wivestales or black magic witchcraft .....for training,  doctoring, raising or general practices for hunting dogs.

Funniest so far was the peeing on your dogs head......was supposed to accomplish something... so let's see if we can pick up a laugh or a handy trick of the trade.

Was told tie the dog up and pee on them if they are hard to catch.
Feed them gun powder to make them mean.
Don't know if they work or not

Lol.  Yep I believe that was the reason given.

A few I remember that were handy.


If a male dog pees in the water bucket continually ....put a tire around it.

Pour a cap full or spoon full of clorox in the water to cut algae and mosquito larvae

Use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting if your dog is poisoned.

Use vegetable oil to flush the intestinal tract if bones or sharp object are swallowed. 

Just a few.

Few caps full of pine OIL mix w water spray on dog makes hair grow great on bare spots . I been doing this for yrs and it works well

I posted a wile back about my pups that were skidish as hell an wouldn't come to or get close to me. Everyone said love on them and show affection. I did so an helped a small bit. But after only one week of taking my better half out to them they are 100 times better now! Something about that woman's touch ;) now when my dogs see her coming they all get mooshy and whiny tho haha :laugh:

Bathe a dog in pine sol to kill fleas like a champ

My step dad always told me to use lemon joy to kill fleas and it works great as well. Plus had a good smell:)

if a dog is skiddish pee in it's water and it will come to you
old oil is good for hot spots
used chewing tobacco is good to worm a dog
pine tar is good for foot spores

Apple cider vinegar in the water is healthier that bleach.
Bluing (spelling) in horses water will keep them from getting sick.
Two panty liners stuck to your welding helmet gear will keep the sweat out of your glasses and off lens.  ;) ;D

I'll stick to wearing my welding cap.

A tampon works good for puncutres that wont stop bleeding. Flour n or sugar will help clot blood.

Powdered sulfer smeared over with axel grease will fix hot spots and certain types of mange.

Use a syringe needle without plunger to drain swell heads.

Always pull a baying pup in the heat of the moment ....to build a lust for more.

You can measure a hogs weight in the field +or-  2 lbs by inserting your index finger into the anal cavity and measuring how many wrinkles from a knuckle deep you go from the center of your fingernail. 

Pour burned oil mixed with diesel on cut hogs in the summer to keep fly larvae from hatching. 

Use powdered alum and melt it down. Dilute with water and use to tighten hard to staple skin areas.

Wellllllll. Maybe that is more under the withcraft category .....But its a Hell of a good laugh to see newbies try.    ;D

Haha. I have heard of twisting a single ply collar to cut the air off and blowing suddenly in an ear to make em let go.   

Again...I will have to get a newbie to confirm that one for us. Lol

Make them swallow?

Feed a dog a few cotton balls soaked in cream and it will wrap itself around Sharp objects that the dog has swallowed like wire, bone shards, or plastic shards so that they can poop them out without getting their gut all cut up.

Lol  yrs back I had a cat. shhhh!! don't tell anyone, I use to blow in his ear to make him let go. no bs ! Also if you in a bind and you have a dog locked on something grab his balls and give em a good tuggg

Use black water buckets to keep algea out

Works great. Sun can't penetrate the black siding on the buckets as well, algae needs sunlight to grow.

Well i'll be........come to think of it i have 1/2 black buckets and 1/2 white.....never paid much attention before now but ur right, algae is only in the white buckets......learn somthing new everyday!

Man I'm glad I come back and read these. Now I know how to field weigh a hog and brwak a catch dog off.

that's what I've heard for yrs., never tried it.

Well I can tell you, I been chewing tobaco for 14 years, I'm fat as I wanna be and I have yet to pull the first worm outa my butt! Lol

   yep I gained a bunch of weight when I quit smoking and went to dipping   lol  .  grandpa used to  put grandma's honest [ powdered snuff , for all you young ones ] in the chicken nest boxes to eliminate lice and mites  .

I still get algee in my black tubs. I dont know if its the water or what where im at

I'm not a scientist so I don't know if it's true or not, but I put a half ounce of clorox in one week, then half an ounce of Corrid ( coccidiosis med ) in the next week to make sure their water stats clean and the coccidial bacteria stays killed

Naw, they r not in the shade. Iv tried the bleach after i drained n cleaned it, but after a couple wks the algee would reapeer. After last yrs drought though, aint no algee. Mayb somethn in the water table at a higher level was leaching the aglee spores in the supply table. Like u said t-bob, i aint no scientist n im just speculating as to why after the drought

I know black rubber buckets will algae in a hurry. Haven't tried plastic.

Easiest way to remedy the situation is to keep a scrub brush next to pens.
Once a week they get scrubbed and water replaced...other than topping off or refills. 
Put a cap full of bleach in bucket when you first begin to fill.... so water agitates and dilutes it properly. 
This will basically serve as a preventive against algae and skeeter larvae due to a higher shot of chlorine. 

If your water is over a week old...it begins to stagnate anyway and should be replaced. 

Watch the buckets after rain water......it changes the ph and will accelerate the deterioration of the clean water.
Summertime also accelerates the process.

This process doesn't harm a hair on your dogs...in fact I would say it is more of a beneficial.....ie bacteria and heartworm preventive. 

I do too but not as bad as the white ones

Where do you get the pine oil?

Dave they have a lil store over by me that sells it for about 2 $ I spray em once a month no matter what .

nope, and its because the "wells" are flowing and not stagnate

pine oil aka: pine-sol

Pine-sol is 8-12% Pine Oil.  The rest is stuff that I wouldn't be comfortable soaking my dogs in.  I've heard motor oil is good, but I am not going that route either.

Didnt know there was a diff. Thanks for the info. We hav bottles n bottles of what says "pine oil" but smells just like pine-sol. I'll take a look n c if its oil or sol. Again thanks for clarifying the diff.

No problem.  I am always leery of putting chemicals on myself or my animals.

   
         NU-STOCK consists of pine oil, sulfur and mineral oil. Also works great for growing back hair on bald spots.

Anyone been practicing Witchcraft or found some new tricks here lately?

I always keep a fat ball of pine rosin around.  Collect and make  my own from standing pines, as well as lighter'd knots I find. Heat it up when I need it. Been using pine resin to treat wounds and skin disorders for generations where I'm from, on critters as well as humans.

Smear safeguard horse wormer on ringworm to kill it.

Ground white pepper is great to stop bleeding on cuts that are hard to staple or cover e.g. ear tips that constantly bleed.

The top glass edge of a rolled down truck window makes a great emergency knife sharpener.

brake fluid  works for earmites. apply deep in ear everyday for a week. Half formaldihye half 5-10% iodine on dogs feet for 5 days  & pad problems are over.

If your dog is over heating or cooking on you while you're hunting, I have something that I do that might save its life.  Take your knife and cut a 1/2" slit near the tip of the ear.  It'll bleed some but that is what you want it to do.......it's releasing the pressure off the brain and head.  Have you ever noticed your dogs ears being cut by briars while they're hunting?  This is Mother Nature's way of taking care of your dogs!

I hang my water buckets from the top of the kennel by a heavy wire. Make it high enough that the males cannot pee in it.

For algae--I just use and extra bucket. Put the new bucket in the kennel and take the algae bucket and put bleach in it. Clean it out and put back in the kennel. Do this for however many dogs you have.

White distilled vinegar and alcohol 50/50, then add 7% iodine until it is like stout tea. Does a number on ear mites and does it quick.

Two cups of tannic acid in a pint of pine tar. Paint dogs pads with this if they are slipped or cut. Works great.

If a dog has limber tail take your thumb and forefinger and squeeze the area between the base of the tail and arse. There is a gland there and it gets infected.

Sorry mate absolute wives tail that one.  Think about it....How does one injury help another one?

Used to be another one here that feeding dogs kangaroo meat taught the dogs to chase them...another wives tail

i know of people all over tx and ok that have tipped dogs ears to prevent heat stroke .

Yes sir, and you can tip a hog's tail when it's overheating also... works great. We've saved many a hog since an old man showed us that.

Yep and theres guys here who believe cutting the ear off a dog will save it from snake bite too...doesn't mean it works

NOT calling anyone a liar, but.....having saved numerous dogs over the years that were having a heat stroke......cutting an ear tip has NOTHING at all to do with bringing a dog out of a heat stroke. No offense to anyone who believes that, but you couldn't PAY be to believe that. All that would do is cause bleeding, likely a lot of bleeding as ears are known to do, especially since the dog's blood pressure will be elevated at the time. An ear bleeding does not relieve pressure off of anything. If anything, it's just adding to the problem, on top of that, an ear cut takes forever to heal.

You folks that haven't ever tried it shouldn't knock it, and someday when you are a long ways from anywhere and your dog falls over unconsious and you know it has just happened give it a whirl.

Was talking to an older feller last for a long time and he was telling me that taking a slice of bread n putting 10 drops of iodine on the bread and give it to the dogs 3x a wk. will kill n prevent heartworms. He was saying his son (i think it was his son) had an old dog riddled with heart worms n an old timer out of n la. told him to use the bread n iodine for 30 days, 30 days off and then 1 more 30 day bread/iodine cycle. He went back to the vet and had the dog checked again and minimal larva. 6 months after that he went to the vet again and NO sign of heartworms or larva. The dog is now 12yr old and for the past 6yrs there has been no more heartworms or any worms for that.

Has any1 heard of this?

can't say that I have but stranger things have worked!

I have a American bulldog , 92 pounds , I had it on the front rack of the atv , I cut a corner and off she went , she was hooked up and her butt slammed the ground , once I got her home she acted funny so me and my family noticed she could not lift her tail , being my 11 year olds boys dog I was in the dog house , we being Christians , laid hands on our dog and prayed she was healed in the name of Jesus , my boy also said a couple of his own prayers , also I might add she had a beautiful tail and stance , curling it up over her back , Monday afternoon me and the boy took the dog to the vet , the vet checked her and said her tail was broke in two places and would never be able to curl over her back again , said we could plate her back for 1500 and maybe she could use again , he said we needed to cut off her tail at about 3 inches at the second break , I told him as my boy had a tear in his eye , no sir , me and my wife and the boy laid hands on Sophie and she is healed in the name of Jesus , he looked at me like yeh right , he said ok in 6 weeks bring her back with your wife and I'll explain we're ill cut the tail , I told my boy to not to believe the vet , your dog is healed in Jesus name ,  she laid around for a couple of days but on Thursday when I got home she was running down the driveway holding her tail up like it never happen , the vet like had a freaked out look on his face to say the least when he seen her , god could of healed her in six weeks but no , he did it in three days , her tail is good as new thanks be to god , thank you lord  TRUE STORY
