See if he is gonna cut mustard enough to make it to tha timber. Train in stages with a wary eye and a heavy hand along the way. You might have to go through one.....or one hundred before you get ya a decent strike dog prospect.
Dont put the cart before the horse! Title: Re: best way to start a strike dogs??? Post by: hoghunter71409 on April 18, 2013, 03:07:29 pm If you have room to let him run loose, it is the best thing for a dog, especially a young dog. I like the idea of letting a young dog listen to an open mouth dog run, it creates a lot of excitement and the it is easier for a young dog to stay with a dog they can hear. Dont be afraid that this may may your dog open. My eight year old catahoula has ran with my plotts her entire life, she dont open on track. Just becuase a dog barks at a hog in a pen doesnt mean anything about hunting. A lot of dogs bark in a pen but have no idea how to use a nose. Let the pup bark at a caught hog. Then let the hog go and watch the pup follow. Spend the time in the woods, not a pen and not a drag.
