Title: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: 700 on July 14, 2009, 10:55:02 pm Okay I know this will be a remington vs winchester type of thread but I am going to take a shot at it anyways.Whats a good hog dog that will get the job done but is family friendly-meaning -I dont have to worry about him with my other dogs or kids running aorund the backyard.Or do you guys keep your dogs totally isolated and penned from family and friends etc .Just asking, remember I am new to this.
Title: Re: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: cward on July 14, 2009, 11:11:21 pm Everone will have a different idea of what kind of dog to use !! But you can have a good hunting dog and a pet. Just remember a hog dog could take a bad hit and it is hard to loose them when they are like family.. Were are you located at.. mite have a dog for you! That will work as a family/hunting dog.

I'm over here in Aggie land.College Station.I am just to the point of thinking about getting a dog,BUT not as of yet.I want to keep going to the bay contest and keep going to all the events I can and learn all I can before I get a dog. Yeah I know about the loss of a dog.It hurts just to see my friends dogs get hurt.I watched him have to put one down and that part (just being honest) did not like that part to much-but hey its hunting.I am to old to go running through the woods chasing hogs in the heat of the day or chasing them for miles through the woods.I use to run beagles, lost a few and it didnt matter how close or not-it hurt.I grew up in the Valley (Harlingen) hunting hogs on the river with Pitt Bulls etc etc.I like hunting them pigs with or without a dog.I just dont want to get a dog and know nothing about the do's and donts of hog dogs. Thanks for the reply. I would think that would be a good idea-but then ran into a guy that swears off anybody from coming around his dogs-friends or family.Just learning, aint trying to do anyhting more than figure out the do's and donts. What breed of dog is that .If he is your #1 dog and is an inside dog at the same time-I would (seriously) like to know what hog dog has that kind of temperment.I also need to find one that will not tear the hell outta my wifes flower etc...I dont want to get off on the wrong foot with her and a new dog. ;D Title: Re: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: Circle C on July 16, 2009, 08:42:32 am 700,
Any breed of hog dog should be able to be both family pet/ companion and hog dog. Some people have different opinions of how handling a dog as a pet can effect the dogs hunting performance. I would argue that it depends on the dog. I have dogs that are both pets and hunting dogs, and I have dogs that are only hunting dogs. If you have 4 hours one morning just come and help out around the training kennals and you might pick up a thing or two. I don't know a lot but because of age have forgotten a lot also. but can show you what not to do, maybe. Always glad to have a newbe come by and see how things work. Have a lot of patiances and hunt with dogs before you buy something on what they said dog would do. If you see it hunt before you buy it should hunt after you buy. I just know of a fella that does not allow his friends or family near his pens.I thought that that was kinda odd,but then I have only messed with Labs & Beagles so I figured maybe it was just a hog dog thing. Now I find out -thats just his preference. Title: Re: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: nosightsneeded on July 17, 2009, 11:09:46 am I think any dog breed of huting dog could be both. I trust my dogs with my daughter that 18 months old to the fulliest. I would not want one that i could trust. they have learned that they dont touch her she touches them.
Title: Re: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: Wormy Dog Kennels on July 17, 2009, 11:46:30 pm 700, I have been breeding these dogs for a long time, I know them inside and out, I know their mind, All my dogs are either yella, or brindle dogs, and their temperment is great, I have never aloud agresive behavor, from the time they are pups, they are socialized in the house in the bed and on the couch LOL, i think i helps cause by nature alot of curs are timid, on rare accation, i will get a pup out of my line that is a complete weirdo, and i always give them special attention, my dogs have the mind and are smart enough it seems natural for them to be easy going, kinda like a good kid , you never have to woop them, but some times they have a brain fart, and you have to remind them, that your the boss, I have raised countless pups, and only a select few, have been the kind that '' dont chew or tear things in my opinion, it's just the dog, they are all different, just like me and you. But I have tried to breed quiet, well mannerd dogs and it works for me. I 'm sure you can find the pup and the line yourl ooking for, just be paitent, and it will, and l could work out good for you, Here's ol'e momma 'Worm' house dog!

I have a couple dogs that will let you pet and mess around with them all day long, and one gyp that could care less if she ever got touched. Not an unfriendly dog by any means, I fully trust her around strangers, kids, and other dogs, but she's just not much of a "give me attention" kind of dog.
Title: Re: Newbie starting to think about a dog Post by: JJT on July 28, 2009, 12:43:45 pm ya i think like wormy dog, i have my dogs as part of the family and not just tools. seems to me that when you are bonded to your dogs they hunt harder and they do it for you and not for them selves. if you spend time with them then they will know you and learn what u say and what you want them to do. i hog hunt like some folks go boating, its a recreational thing, you get out there and have funn with friends and get to see your dogs work.
