Title: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: bghogdogtx on July 16, 2009, 12:03:45 pm (im sure this topic has been talked about). I heave heard different storys. Do yall use the same dogs that you hunt during the day to hunt at night. Does it just depend on the Dog? Thanks in advance for the Info.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Boardog on July 16, 2009, 12:06:08 pm All my dogs hunt both night and day and to me theres not a whole lot of difference the scent of pig is the same in the night as in the day. Just my opinion i aint no expert though ;D

Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Boardog on July 16, 2009, 12:10:54 pm Naw they do the same as in the day as in the night. I do believe in starting a puppy in the woods during the day time just seems to give it more confidence i guess cause they feel safer when they can see everything better i dont know. ;D

I HAVE SEEN ALOT OF DOGS THAT DONT HUNT WORTH A FLIP AT NIGHT BUT HUNT GOOD DURING THE DAY I THINK IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DOG AND HOW THE DOG WAS STARTED AND HOW U HUNT ALSO EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: jeffeasttx on July 16, 2009, 12:24:10 pm Personally i use the same dogs hunting day and night. I think it takes a better dog to hunt at night, i know they can still see and all, i think it's just hardier on them. but i only hunt puppies during the day time in case get into a mess and i can keep a better eye on them.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Mike on July 16, 2009, 12:26:05 pm I hunt my dogs night and day. I have had and have seen a bunch of dogs that would only during the day and not do much at night. I've also seen dogs that "come alive" at night and suck tailpipe during the day.
The dogs I have now do fine both ways. Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: bghogdogtx on July 16, 2009, 12:32:47 pm Thanks Guys
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Bryant on July 16, 2009, 12:35:58 pm The dogs typically do best at what their most accustomed to. My dogs will hunt at night, but typically not the same as in the mornings. I just don't go that often at night.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: bob on July 16, 2009, 01:05:42 pm Ive, been several times at night in oklahoma, there arent as many hogs here as there is in texas , but plenty of skunks , possums, armadillas . Ive never bayed a hog at night , but the dogs do really well in the day , it really depresses me, but we will keep working to be better night hunters
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: elliscountyhog on July 16, 2009, 01:08:28 pm There is a diffrence to me, my dogs would burn the woods up during the day, but at night i cant get them to leave the 4 wheeler, theey think it is time to go to bed.. ;D Of course i dont hunt much at night anyway
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Cull Buck on July 16, 2009, 04:16:03 pm I much prefer to hunt when I can see but this heat has made us night hunters this summer. I noticed when we first started hunting at night the dogs didn't want to get ahead as far as normal. After a couple hunts they adjusted and now I think they are actually get out farther than ever before. It could be the pack is maturing or maybe they just like getting rowdy at night.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Circle C on July 16, 2009, 04:42:13 pm I can't tell a difference in my dogs between day and night. I would guess that I hunt about 50/50, so that probably has something to do with it. Even though my preference is to hunt during the day.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: djhogdogger on July 16, 2009, 04:46:02 pm We didn't even consider that there might be a difference in day verses night. We started our dogs out during the day for our benefit in seeing how a young dog performs but when the temp got too high we started hunting at night without giving it a second thought. Now that I think about it, they hunt the same day or night. Except they will hang with a hog longer at night, I think because its cooler.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: got2catchem on July 16, 2009, 04:53:58 pm Its been my experience that some dogs can make the transition with no problem, while it takes others a couple of hunts to get used to it. The first couple times I ran my dogs at night, I nearly swore it off. I kept with it and now they hunt the same at night as they do in the day..sh$%ty.. ;D
I have seen this a couple of times with a couple of my friends who have some good dogs also. Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Caughtandhobbled on July 16, 2009, 05:31:20 pm I use my dogs day and night with no noticable differences in thier hunting. The difference that I have noticed over the years is that the dogs seem get way more staples at night.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: L3Outdoors on July 16, 2009, 06:13:45 pm My dogs hunt day and night, but I have always picked up better numbers during the day time. I think it is a lot harder for the hog to sneak away during the day. When I hunt a place during the day time I hunt in the heat of the day, and will stalk down wind from where I think hogs are bedded then turn the dog loose when he starts winding and gets stirred up. I am real picky about when I will turn a dog loose. I would rather go home empty handed than teach a hog what a dog is. I usually wait till the dog is going nuts over some sent rather than turn the dog loose to early and push a hog that has the upper hand on us anyway.
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Purebreedcolt on July 16, 2009, 09:33:41 pm Was talking to a guy the last bremond bay and he said his lead strike dog will find hogs all day long but at night he seems disorenated. Said he even bayed up a bunch of wood duck babies the other night. I have heard a couple of times that some dogs just can not see as well as we think at night allmost night blind
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Yeller on July 16, 2009, 09:42:36 pm I hunt mine day or night . I have seen good hog dogs that were what we call moon eyed at night, and if they get very far from you they would bark lost and act all crazy
Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: stoked on July 17, 2009, 02:52:05 am my dogs will hunt both day and night the same.
i think the dogs can see a little better in the day. mine will stop a pig quicker in the day, but we hunt a lot of nights probably more than days. we hunt a lot though... Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: hogtied on July 22, 2009, 12:49:51 am I hunt 95% at night, hogs are nocturnal and generally stir more at night, plus its cooler... I hunt my pups at night as young as 6 months, it exposes them to coons and other nightime critters so they can be broke off them at an early age...as for older dogs, mine hunt the same day or night, they are a little more rangy at night, some folks say their dogs wont hunt at night, and they use the same line about hunting off 4 wheelers or horses... I think its more of an excuse than anything... a HOGDOG should hunt day or night, horse or 4wheeler, open or thick... A dog is not finished until he can repeatedly and proficiently handle any situation thrown at him, and thats the main thing that separates a GOOD dog from a FINISHED dog, they have to be versatile...and that takes years (for the guy that tried to sell me a 1.5 year old finished dog for $1200!!!) Its just my opinion tho, im a harsh judge on dogs... If he is scared of the dark tape a flashlight on his collar ;D I no more hunters that arent comfortable with hunting at night than I do dogs

BUT THERE NOT FINISHED rolleyesAND IM THE SAME WAY WE HUNT OFF OF 4WEELERS AND HORSES AND MY DOGS HUNT THE SAMETitle: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: cantexduck on July 22, 2009, 10:39:16 am I disagree. I think some dogs hunt better at different styles. Pull up to sign and cast the dogs. Road them. Walk hunt them. Horse back. Wheelers. I think it would be hard to find a dog that hunts the same no matter how they are hunted.
My pot lickers were never hunted at night till I got them. It shows. Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: DIAMOND A KENNELS on July 22, 2009, 11:05:53 am I disagree. BUT HOW EVER I HAVE SEEN SOME PEOPLE WALK THERE DOGS IN AND HUNT AND THEY BASICALLY WALKED THE DOGS STRAIT 2 THE HOG THIS IS FINE AND ALL BUT I PERSONALLY WANT A HUNTING DOG AND BESIDES THAT ALL THE PLACES WE HUNT ARE WAY 2 BIG 2 WALK AND HUNT. I DO NOT WANT 2 DO THE HUNTING 4 THEM. IF THIS WAS THE CASE I HAVE A FRIEND JAMIE THAT I CAN PUT A TRACKING COLLAR ON AND TURN HIM LOOSE WALKING AND HE CAN FIND AND BAY ME HOGS LOL. JUST KIDDING AND I HAVE SEEN DOGS PEOPLE TURN LOOSE IN HOG SIGN 2 FIND HOGS BUT. I LIKE 2 TURN LOOSE AND LET MY DOGS WORK AND GO HUNT NOT WALK WITH THEM 2 THE HOGS. AND I DONT WANT 2 GO FIND THE HOG SIGN FOR THEM AND THEN TURN THEM LOOSE THEY SHOULD BE ABLE 2 FIND IT ON THERE OWN. BUT EVERY BODY HUNTS DIFFERENT SO IM NOT DOWNING ANYBODY THIS IS JUST HOW I LIKE MY HUNTING DOGS My pot lickers were never hunted at night till I got them. It shows. Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: Wmwendler on July 22, 2009, 01:25:26 pm Dogs respond off of cues thats the reason why you can use the same dog for different jobs. They dont know which job they are supposed to do because they can read minds, or because you said "we are working cows today so be sure you don't go looking for hogs". Its because when you load them up in the cattle trailer with horses that cues them that you are working cattle. Or load the 4-wheeler and cut collars in the back of the truck they got hogs on thier mind. But if all your dog has ever done at night, was sit in the kennel they are'nt gonna be cued into hunting. But they will learn to hunt at night and the dogs with high drive obviously will learn faster. One time my step mom wanted to go hunting, well all the time my dads dogs had seen her it was time for petting, so they just thought it was time for a trail ride. lol. She went hunting with us several times and it was that way every time. But they would hunt when she was not around.

Apples to apples cant be made in the dog world. I think some of the hardest hunting dogs, that I have seen ,are the ones that are cast by their owners. Title: Re: Night and/or Day dogs Post by: DIAMOND A KENNELS on July 22, 2009, 02:30:28 pm Diamond, yep everybody is different Apples to apples cant be made in the dog world. I think some dogs hunt better at different styles. Pull up to sign and cast the dogs. Road them. Walk hunt them. Horse back. Wheelers. I think it would be hard to find a dog that hunts the same no matter how they are hunted. Your rite dogs like that dont come up for sell very often, and like I said it separates the GOOD dogs from the FINISHED dogs, If they wont do it all they are still on the road to being finished, and if you sold me a finished dog that didnt handle anything I threw at him then he is finished in your situation but not mine... making him started, not finished. Im not dogging anybodys dog, but if they cant do it all then they still need training.. Brings up the point that there is no finished dog 2yrs old even tho he will find a hog there is not enough hours in 2 years to finish a dog completely. there are plenty good dogs that consistently find hogs off a 4wheeler running down the road in fresh hog signs, or off horses where you walk them up in hog signs, or in the day when you see hogs to point them to,some go deep, some stay close... why wouldnt anybody want a dog that did all that and knew when to do it on his own? If its a hog dog it should not matter when where or how... most folks never been in the woods with a truely jam up finished hog dog, and those that have no what im talking about. I dont mean to offend anybody tho, if you like your dog and he hunts the way you want him to thats all that counts... I guess i just expect alot out of mine and like pushing them to make their whole life a learning experience ;DMy pot lickers were never hunted at night till I got them. It shows. |
