Title: Super dogs- % male vs female
Post by: Sdogs on May 15, 2013, 02:22:12 pm
I don't post much at all on this site but do a lot of reading.  I'm just curious out of all the "super dogs" that you know or heard of how many were male and how many were female?

Most of the better dogs i hear of or see is usually male. I don't know the reason for that maybe because most people prefer male dogs. Me i have both but I prefer a good gyp.
A guy once told me and makes since, "if you don't have a good gyp you are out of dogs and just don't know it yet".

The best ones I have seen have been males. Hunted with some really good gyps but more good males than females from my experience.

Ive hunted with some very fine male dogs but the very best hog dog Ive seen was a female. I perfer females less bs when its time to hunt and females seem to  mature faster.

I don't know what's better but I wish every dog I ever had was female so we didn't have to piss on every bush and try to hump everything

I prefer to hunt gyps than them knuckle-headed males   lol   most not all but most of the best dogs I have ever ran were gyps . started earlier way more focused and took care of business . I would usually run 3 gyps and one male dog just for some muscle  .

I have had some good females...but I like males that have the muscle and size...early starters that get gone...can not keep a male that wants to start crap and piss on every bush before hunting...a good hunting dog is thinking about hunting when in the woods and not about trying to be top dog...I like a dog to mind his own business but also to not take any crap from another dog...

All-in-all, I think the higher percentage of good to great dogs are female.  However, I believe the best of the best, the super dogs, the ones that are in the top 1% of all the great dogs are males.  Those very select few males see past all the other stuff and they only care about hunting.  I've seen just a couple of these males and one of the things that I think made them great was they were not hunted with many females at all.

I don't no that I have ever hunted the super dog!  I have hunted behind several really nice dogs.   I guess it's just all a mater of opinion, on what a super dog is.   A male dog that is worried about stuff other than hunting to me is a cull...I don't care male or female they have a job to do... With Victor at $30 a bag they better do their job because they are on the pay roll.   Maybe I have just been lucky, but the few guys I do hunt with really tend to their business and make sure they don't hunt any gyps that are in heat, which would allow the males to focus on their job, or maybe these males are just focused well.  I'm not going to have a grouchy dog.  It may also be that not hunting with others often, or the few I hunt with the dogs all know each other and don't have to waste time going threw the pissing & growling bs. I don't know the answer.

i like males myself ......there's adiference in a male needing to wizz are just marking ...  marking can become a problem .... if  mine starts marking to much i'll  get on em  ...my old poncho dog was bad about it you could turn him on an old hog trail or try and send him down a bottom and if  there was nothing to smell  he'd circle back to the road and trot along and  mark ...  after i run him down a few  times and tore his  rear  up and sent him off the road he quit it .... problem i have with females is  most males will follow em ... even if they ain't in heat .. style i hunt a  dog has to get on in there and hustle a track or  sign  ...can't be worried about smell'n ... or marking ..
