Title: Temperature Question Post by: POTTER on July 20, 2009, 04:28:53 pm The question I have is at what temperature will you not run your dogs. One guy has told me he does not run his dogs when the temperature is 72 degrees(F) or higher. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: djhogdogger on July 20, 2009, 04:37:18 pm On a 100 degree plus day we will run the dogs at night when the temps are in the upper 80's to low 90's. But we take the usual precautions and always bring ice water on the four wheelers with a water bowl.
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: djhogdogger on July 20, 2009, 04:40:00 pm I will admit that we hunted the other night after a rain and it was 74 degrees with a breeze and the dogs ran twice as far and never so much as panted. Might be something to that 72 degrees.
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: 3g.southtexas on July 20, 2009, 04:41:31 pm I agree with the South Texas comment...
Last couple of hunts we had temps in the 90-93 degree range at round midnight - BUT - we try to stay really close to the water holes... that's where the pigs are going to be staying anyways. just my experiences... I'd like to be able to hunt in 72 degree or lower weather :) Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: smwilson on July 20, 2009, 04:51:22 pm Heck! if that were the case we couldn't hunt from May to October. When it's hot, hunt at night or early in the morning. there have been several discussion on taking care of your dogs in this heat in this forum. Lot's of good Ideas. Hey, maybe my wife will let me buy an offshore boat so I don't get bored during the months that it's to hot to hunt.
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: djhogdogger on July 20, 2009, 04:52:26 pm Potter, what part of the country does your friend live?
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: hillbilly on July 20, 2009, 05:32:42 pm We would not hunt hardly anytime of year if we waited on 72 degrees. I realy don't know the temp but if it don't feel to hot to me when I am outside I say say turn em loose. Also depends if there is water close by.
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: POTTER on July 20, 2009, 05:33:24 pm Thanks for the advice yall. Djhogdogger my friend lives on the eastern part of New Mexico and hunts the TEX-New Mexico border thru the sand dunes.
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: djhogdogger on July 20, 2009, 06:54:31 pm Potter, seems like it would be pretty hot there most of the year. Did he say why he chose to hunt in 71 degrees or less? I mean, did he have a particular reason for that number? Oh, and by the way since we hunt in the East Texas woods, I think it would be really cool to see some sand dune hogs, got any pics? ;D
Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: mutt hunter on July 20, 2009, 07:04:07 pm Thanks for the advice yall. Djhogdogger my friend lives on the eastern part of New Mexico and hunts the TEX-New Mexico border thru the sand dunes. im no weather man but i think the temp drops quite a bit in desert area. thats probably why he can be so picky about the temp. i say just get your dogs in shape and keep their body fat to a minimum and work them in the heat so they can build up a tolerance to it. when i say work them i mean do something like run them around with the 4wheeler but be careful and bring plenty of water or work them next to water. start slow and make it tougher each time. Title: Re: Temperature Question Post by: Yeller on July 20, 2009, 08:17:39 pm Got a friend who lives in Portales N.M. he said in the summer after 10 Pm the temp drop to the 70s

Like I say I'm new to this so i try to soak in everything. He hunts when it is hot too but for some reason that 72 degrees stuck with me. I will try to find some pictures of the hogs we caught in the sand dunes. Personally I hate the dunes it will wear you out going up and down thru the dunes and chinnery. Yellar we probably know some of the same people out of Portales, I hunt with acouple of them.
