Title: What's the most "interesting" or unique cross that's made a good'un? Post by: MrsLouisianaHogDog on May 23, 2013, 05:15:21 pm WELL.........
I am curious to hear from y'all.........what is the most odd/unique cross dog you've hunted behind that turned out to be a real good dog? What sparked this interesting question, is that I am picking up a pup from a good hunting buddy of ours tonight, that is a very odd cross, (off an accidental breeding) and I have high hopes to make a great bay dog out of him. I was told the heritage on the pup, and figured, why not give him a shot. Pup is a male, 6mths old. Sire is a VERY respected catahoula hog dog, and the dam is a Jack Russel/Rat Terrier cross! Y'all know I do run terriers (Patterdales) and I also am quite fond of the camo dogs.....so this should be an interesting journey. Hopefully the lil guy turns out. If he doesn't make me a hog dog, I'm sure he'll make someone a good squirrel dog, or even just a kids pet. I'll get pics for y'all once I get him home. Had some Dobie crosses also that would have been good dogs but died at a young age(hogs).

Well....here he is. Fresh after a 'scarey' ride home, a bath, nail trim, and deworming, lol. Poor guy doesn't know what to think. I aged him by his teeth to me more around the 4-5mth age range. I dunno, I have a good feelin about this one. Time will tell. Anywho, I wound up naming him "Early," from the adult swim cartoon the Squidbillies, LOL. Here he is..... Post by: Reuben on May 24, 2013, 09:37:03 am Early is a nice looking pup...as a kid I had a few mutts I hunted and some were colored like that...the mother to them was a hard hunting hunt anything fox terrier and the father was a heeler/cat cross (the best we could tell) who also hunted all game...those pups were hunting dogs early on...

I've got quite a bit of bonding to do with him, he is VERY shy. Not fearful per se'.....just unsocialized. Just took him for our first bonding nature walk. He did real good too. Stayed right with me.....but he'd wander a bit and be nose to the ground. Can't wait to see how he is when he's out of his shell finally! Gonna be fun to see what traits he expresses from the different breeds he consists of..... Figured it might be a bulldog pup, so he kept him around. Well that lil dog didnt turn out to be but bout 35-40 lbs with a flag tail and medium coat. He jokes "thats my fiest dog". Well he was a good yard dog that listened good, so he got to hang around a lil longer. Soon that dog started barkin at the hogs in the pen, so he got a trip to the woods, and turned out to be a good, gritty dog....now he's the "self taught, fiest dog":D

Yeah I figure even IF he doesn't catch on to hogs, he'll surely hunt somethin! It's pretty cool cause on our private road, we have fox, deer, opossum, and coyotes that cross through. Everytime I take him down the road now he's smellin all the tracks. On our way back down the road, we could her the entire yard cuttin up so we quickened the pace. My lil spotted sow Shake-n-Bake decided to get out of the pen, lmao. Co dependent lil shat ran RIGHT to my husband too lmfao. I brought lil Early over to her and he sniffed her pretty good but he was too put off my the yard all goin off and all that. He's got some time to acclimate still. My hunting buddy also has his half brother off the catahoula daddy that is his lead dog....very good dog. |
