Title: Hair loss
Post by: Swine-Stalker on June 16, 2013, 06:45:19 pm
Not sure if it is heat, fleas, or the start of mange. It isn't thick patches, and no scabs. Saw that she had a few fleas and plan on giving her flea med tomorrow. It is just thinning on the sides around he ribs. I pinched softly at the hair and pulled away (not enough to pull strong hair) and got quite a few pieces. All dogs are in the shade, she is also, but the rest of the dogs dig in the dirt to lay in cool dirt... She don't. Any way to tell for sure or should I just go ahead with flea meds and give her a used oil bath later this week?

wish I could help, i've got a decent number of dogs in my yard and 1 of them has the same thing going on, not sure what it is, I dipped him along with the others last weekend and they are all utd on all shots/vaccines, I don't know if it's the heat, dust or what but he is loosing patches of hair and appears to have chewed his tail pretty good, im gonna give him a oil bath and if he doesn't look better within a week its off to the vet we go!

Started her 3 day worming again today. Treated her for fleas and put diatomaceous earth in her house and where she lays on the chain incase of mites... Gave her 3 raw eggs for her coat. Gonna continue in the worming and eggs and if no improvement by Thursday I will try the oil if I have time... If not it has to wait till Monday.

She is a black dog... When I looked at her again today, her hair is dry and brittle, and like before no sores or scabs but slight skin peeling/flaking like a light sunburn in the "thinning" areas. The flakes have a orangeish to light red tint.

Cody, go to Tractor Supply and get a bottle of Prolate Lintox. Use 1 oz. to a gallon of water and saturate
dog with a rag or sponge. Not just hair but skin also. Wipe her face and ears also. Do this once a week for
3 weeks. This will take care of any mange mites, scabies, lice, flies, fleas, ticks etc.

Between  Prolate treatments, Use an anti-fungal like Lotrimin or lamisil. That will take care of any fungal
infections such as ring worms or fungus.

You can mix Nu-Stock with the anti-fungal cream also.  Them skin problems take time to get a handle on.

Another thing that helps is get a couple of boxes of 20 mule team borax. Sprinkle all around your pens, dog houses, chain spots etc. It will keep all insects at bay. It is a harmless laundry detergent and a natural insect
killer. Sprinkle it very light. more is not better in this case.

Bathed her in happy jacks anti fungal, give her Nimex, ivomec, and a comfortis Tuesday. Today, hair is shiny, strong and hard to pull, and her energy is back. All that's left is for her to replace lost hair.
