Title: SO HOT!
Post by: djhogdogger on June 29, 2013, 06:37:22 pm
We are going to make a hunt tonight but it will be the hottest hunt we have been on this year. It got up to 103 degrees today and it supposed to be in the eighties tonight. I imagine that we will take it slow, let the dogs rest and cool off between runs, and mostly let them wind from the buggies. Also hunt near some reservoirs and canals so the dogs can take a swim if needed.

Anyone else going to brave the heat?

Yes ma'am. Making a run in the wee hours...drop around 4 a.m. Or so I guess. Should be around 79 degrees or so here. Not really sure if we'll road or just hood. There is some water around where we'll be hunting but ill take some extra.

Wait and go around 3 or 4 in the morning and hunt till 8 or 9. That's about the only way I'm gonna do it till it cools off.

Heated stroked a fair dog about four weeks ago. He survived, but more than likely won't be able to hunt hard. Really put me in a bind for dogs. Everyone be careful!!

Well guys, it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. At 10pm it was still steamy hot but after midnight it cooled off quite a bit. Stayed out til 3am and never did get the hogs located. Eh, thats how it goes sometimes.

tell me about how dry it is  lol  . I have to wear a dusk mask to go feed the dogs , every step they take they kick up dust , just got through watering all the pens down again . makes you wonder how them poor ol dogs can smell anything without getting their nostrals clogged up with dirt  .

I'd sure like to go,....but not enough to heat stroke one of my dogs. I don't know how it is in TX in summer, but in Bama it's just too hot and humid most of the time, day or night. I cannot abide loosing a dog to heat stroke when you don't have to. This is a pretty sore subject for me and I will take the high road here and not say anything more about it.

All places/ terrain are different, Where the hunt took place saturday night there was ample available water and to be honest it felt good outside, coolest i can ever recall it being at the beginning of july.

Yessir...was real nice Saturday nite. We did a little scouring after we were done hunting and it didn't start heating up till about 8:30-9:00.

Almost chilly this morning....sure wish I was off today. Not suppose to be bad 4th of July. May have to make an Independence Day run, lol.

I normally try to shut it down when it hits 80 degrees or so around hunting time (depending on humidity).

I agree that sometimes it's actually a bit cool early in the morning in summer, but those days are rare and yes, you need to make use of them if you can. What scalds my rear is when folks go out and it's hotter than the front door to hell and the humidity is about as high as it gets in summer. It matters not how much water there is around if the dogs don't bay a hog that's standing in it. I need to stop here....if not I'm going to hurt some folks feelings and that's not what I want to do.

I agree Neal. We have had some days in the past where its 80 degrres at 2am and 80% humidity. I figure that if im miserable, then its worse for the dogs since they are wearing a fur coat.

You're exactly right Dinah.....and they can't sweat like we do.

I know it's hot , but conditioning has a lot to do with it . and the breed of dogs most use . most these ol cur dogs are what we call double coated and it's thick , but all my years  [ younger cause I can't take it anymore  ] we would run our coon hounds and beagles at night and I've never had a hound overheat . but the hounds are slick coated and run cooler  .

Just a quick tip....

Keep a spray bottle of alcohol on hand. When the dogs start getting hot, spray their ears, and the pads of their feet. This is one of the things we'd do whenever we had a heat stroke dog brought in to us. Aids in cooling them down faster.
