Title: Need Imput
Post by: Cajun on July 02, 2013, 01:06:29 pm
I am almost finished with my kennels & want ya'lls imput on what to use for doors. They will be approximately 12" x 16".  I wanted some kind of plastic or teflon( something that discourages chewing but my source did not come thru. Also hinges that swing both ways. Also, where to buy it at. Thanks

I would just use plywood or MDF. Then make a frame out of angle iron (steel) weld the hinges to the angle frame. Stain and seal the wood and attach it to the frame with bolts to the frame. Then you can take it apart and re-paint it if it starts to look bad or replace the wood.

Man that's one heck of a set up.  What does the inside look like and what did that thing run ya?

U might consider using the "retreads" off of a semi truck tire...  A tire shop would probably give old used ones away, or cruise the interstate and you'll find'em sitting on the side of the road.  If the dogs start chewing them, I'm pretty sure they'll stop when they reach the metal treads inside the rubber...  Cut'em to length using a reciprocating saw...

What about the heavy hard rubber floor mats found in maintenance shops or horse stalls? I'm pretty sure you can pick em up in tractor supply but i'd be lying if I had an idea on price

Do you have chain link left over?  What about cutting a piece of treated plywood the size of you door opening.  Then take a piece of chain link or other type of 4x4 or 2x4 Galv panel and cut it the same size as the door (maybe a tad bit smaller) using a bolt cutter.  Attach hinges and staple fencing to both sides of plywood.

I would think this will make door sturdy and discourage chewing, especially if you get the 2x4 Galv panel.  Just make sure that the sharp edges of the panel do not cut or scrath dogs back when they walk through.  You may put a rubber sweep type end on the bottom of the door.

I thought about the rubber mats. Did not know if dogs would chew them or not.

Thinking this might be the way to go, except use facial metal to cover it with. Rent a brake to bend it with.
Thanks & please keep the ideas coming.
Just got the bathroom in & working on the plumbing. The inside is climate controlled. Still need to build a work bench & some closets for storage. Will take some pics. when I am done.

how about 1/4 inch treated plywood and have it wrapped with stainless insulation metal...the type they use to insulate vessels and piping in chemical plants etc...etc...

How about a piece of 1/8 aluminum plate with an  X broke in it for strength ? A fab shop could fix the doors
and build the 2 way hinges on them. It will cost more than rubber or wood but they will last and look first
class for your first class set up.

Cajun, how are you going to wash your pens out? Will you have to get inside each pen and wash away from
the building or do you have a drain system ? Just curious. You built an awesome set up.

I would use 1/8 or 1/4 lexan

Jimco, The kennels are sloped towards the building. I have a trough about 10" x 5 "deep next to the building. By the gates I have about a 2"rise sloping down to the trough. The drain is off center but the trough is also sloped towards the drain. I will have to valves at each end that shoot a stream of water down the trough to the drain. All I have to do is wash everything to the trough from the outside & the turn on the outside valves &everything gets washed to the drain. The building is also sloped to the drain & I can rinse the inside out too.
  Rocking J, What is Lexan?
Rueban, where do you get stainless insulation metal & what does it cost?

Mike,  Lexan is like plexi glass but stronger.  I use it as replacement glass in trucks and forklifts doors.  Can drill holes into it for hinges.  You can google search.  Look Grainger online.  You should be able to cut the Lexan with a jig saw.

I really don't know what it costs...can't be too much...I know the insulators at the plant can build about anything with the stainless sheet metal...If I were you I would find an insulator who works in a plant and just tell them what you want and they can probably help you out for a decent price...

It's some pretty strong stuff, they have it at Home Depot an it cuts good with a skilsaw along as I have a good blade

Thanks Guys. I am going to check out the lexan at home depot first. One of the great things about this site. If you have a question, somebody on here probably has the answer.

Maybe something like this. They are pricey but you could take the idea and make your own.

I would use 18 wheeler mudflaps. They are pretty tough. But a stubborn dog may try to chew it.

Or the used poly material they use on the bottom of airboats.

The metal Reuben is talking about you can buy from Distribution international the last time I got some it was 300 dollars for a 100 ft roll I used it to cover my gages for my gamecocks!!! If you can find a plant worker they should be able to help. Y could also use hardy  board it comes in 4x8 sheets and is real tuff!! Good luck nice looking kennels!!!

How did you end up building the doors?

P.S. I know an insulator that should be able to get what you need.

I ended up with a sheet of plastic, may be lexon & cutting them to size & adding a 4" strip of sheet metal to the bottom to prevent chewing. I used piano hinges, cut to size for the hinges. Just finishing up the inside & will take pictures. Other then running my auto lick spouts, I am almost done.
