Title: Lost my #2 dog yesterday
Post by: hogdogger98 on July 07, 2013, 08:24:03 am
I lost my redbone pit cross yesterday. I only hunt 2 dogs a ybmc(rooster) and this redbone pit ( lefty) and catch a lot of hogs. I only have 1 garmin collar. I put it on rooster because lefty has stayed right beside rooster for 2 years. Well yesterday it showed rooster treed so I start to them and it broke and rooster took off after the hog. Well I guess he got out run because he came back and lefty did not. My guess is Lefty finally met his match with a bad hog. I know these 2 dogs as well as I know myself if he wasn't dead he would have came back to where I let out. The worst part is Lefty is my 13 year old boys dog and he was with me. What do you say?

I think all a man can do in this situation is explain to a son that this happens in hog hunting.  This is a type of hunting where the not only can the hunted get killed.  I have a five year old and a three year old.  My three year old cannot understand, but the five year old does.  We talk about dogs going to heaven and because we are Christians, he understands.  It is never easy to lose a great; whether it is your son or you.  This is a rough way of life.  I watched Where the Red Fern Grows last night for maybe the 100th time, heck even that movie still makes me sad.

Yeah it stinks. I left a jacket where I turned loose yesterday and my buddy went back today. He still wasn't there.

Did you follow the entire trail that rooster took?  You should be able to walk his track?  Can you turn rooster loose again where you think lefty may be?  Maybe he will find lefty...dead or alive.

No I didn't take the track because it was 1.2 of a mile through a pine thicket you can dig your way through. The thing that is weird I heard him bark a lost bark a couple  times and it sounded like he was headed back toward where I turned out  but never showed up.

Did you try to get to him or go to where the lost bark was coming from?

IF you are saying he is "Barking lost" then go find him... i would have to say he is lost in the thicket.. he may be wounded-but go try and find him....

he probably was injured badly...maybe he can make it out if you go out there and call for him...I would do all I could to get to him...

This is why I will not run my dogs without collars. They may mess up time to time but in a situation like this I want to know. One way or another. Hope ya find lefty.

Dogs are tough and they can live through a lot.  If he is injured badly and still alive, you better get to him super quick.  He would need hydration to stay alive in this heat, especially if he is in a thicket with no moving air.

When I could not find a dog, Ive tied another dog to a tree and walked away.  the lost dog has a way of hearing and coming to a barking dog.  Even if your dog cannot make it to the barking dog, he may bark a time or two and give you additional hope.

I'm not much for trying to tell someone something they already know, especially when they learned the hard way but just some advice, good dogs are worth so much more than a $175 collar.

I went in the thicket a quarter of a mile but after his last bark there was nothing not another sound. shotgun I will never not put a collar on a dog again. I went out again today hoping my ybmc would find him but still nothing.

I've been there man. It's possible he's just lost and not injured. Before I got my Garmin I had a dog out for a week. He was a young dog and got separated during a chase..he never lost bawled....I tried all the tricks but came up empty handed. A week later...hunting the same property he showed up, lol. Honestly...fatter than I keep him on the yard. He had been feeding on an old cow carcass and there was plenty of water around.

Don't give up.

Don't give up I had buddy recentl loose a bulldog for 2 wks and found her almost where he parked at. That is very reason I don't turn a dog loose at all without a collar. If one of my collars is down one dog will stay at home. Good luck on finding your dog

Absolutely dont give up. Had a dog lost for 8 days last summer with a vest and cut collar. Besides being very thin and a little sore from the vest, he was just fine and found pretty near where he was lost. Keep going back and calling for him. Dont give up. Pits are tough.

More than likely the dog barked because it couldn't get to you...seen it before...

I lost my best dog for over 3 weeks...changed sweaty shirts every 3 or 4 days and I traveled 40-50 miles every day...one day the shirt was moved and something had slepted on it...gave me hope and I found a week or so later...

The best part is the place I was hunting is an army base. I left notes on the equipment they are using to clear fire lanes. I left my number with the base police at the check in station I sure hope I find him.

Don't give up just yet.. I lost my dog that I NEVER thought I'd loose for 17 days once... He was the kind that I know would come back or at least bark/call when lost but nothing. Kept going back because I just knew he wasn't gone.. Don't lose hope!

Lefty is my boys dog, so when I got home with Lefty I told my boy to go get my new dog out of the truck. The look on his face was worth a million dollars. He was so happy to have his dog back. He took him to the back yard and that poor dog went straight to his pen and laid down. Lefty was happy to be Home
