My strike dog female will hunt while in heat BUT if there's a male all she does is follow him and try to get it on. What could I do to get her to stop following my buddy's male dog?

To be honest myself and my hunting buddies haven't ever really been able to successfully get around this. If we have a gyp in heat we just leave her at home OR talking to each other beforehand and only bring gyps to hunt that trip. I will tell you this, hunting a gyp in heat with male dogs is a good way to have pups a couple months down the road........ I know personally as far as my dogs go that my males won't hunt near as good with a female in heat around, seems to usually end up with a few little squabbles and scuffles between the males over the gyp.......ever been to a bar that the younger tough guys and pretty girls frequent?.......its pretty much like that but with dogs lol.

  put her up till it's over . unless you want puppys .

If you get with ur hunting buddy's and tell them she's in heat and y'all agree to bring all females that's cool but it burns my a zzz to drop the dogs and find out ur buddy brought a gyp in heat jacked up my night

You can't trick 'nature' and natural instinct.

Either hunt her with all females when she's in season, or leave her sit up at home until her cycle is over.

There's no reason to bring a female in heat on a hunt with male dogs unless you're hunting by yourself.

Not realizing it is one thing, knowing beforehand is something else.

   there is no way I would hunt a gyp in heat period , with all gyps or what  , don't take but a minute for someone's old farm dog or whatever to do the dirty deed . I love hunting gyps but when  they start coming in heat they get locked up tight till it's over period .

another thing I didn't think about when I first posted....... And adding to this is that i imagine a gyp in heat would draw coyotes in as well with her scent.......I may be wrong but I could deff. see it happening.........just something else to think about.

You do not ever hunt a gyp in heat. All you need is some stray to go lock up with her while she is out and you never know. Then she will be out of hunting and you will have a litter of trash. Out her up and wait for her to cool all the way down before you get her out.

I hunted her alone today just her and my catchdog gyp. She pissed a lot. Like I mean a lot here and there but she did strike, but the hogs broke and she didn't stick with them for only about 50 yards and came back. Going to pen her up until she's done, might as well take this time to worm/ flea and all that good stuff

I wouldn't ever bring a gyp that is in heat on a hunt...it's a good way to ruin a good hunt...

I run gyps. When ones in heat I just make sure no males are going on the hunt. Never had a coyote problem so idk

Leave her at home.  atleast a week or two after shes out.  the smell still lingers for a couple days will still sidetrack a male.

Can bring in heat affect the way she hunts? Because she doesn't seem to have a lot of drive

Its a judgment call.  If you are invited on a hunt with buddies don't bring a gyp in heat if it could spoil the hunting.  If you are inviting your buddies on a hunt do what you want. If you want or need to hunt your gyp in heat just tell them to leave the males at home.    Chances are a gyp in heat wont hunt as hard when they are in heat and hormones are out of wack.  That's very common.  But if they are a decent dog in the first place they should still be able to get the job done even when their mind is not 100% right.    The easiest is to keep them locked up.  But there is nothing wrong with hunting a gyp in heat if you are own your own terms.  If you were invited on a hunt then its a different story.  My main bitch is not receptive to strange males,  she would not let them mount her anyway even if she was full blown hot.  I've hunted her lots when she was in heat.  You can put vicks vapor rub around the vag. when they are coming in and going out to mask they scent and narrow the time you have to keep them up.  A good male dog should get the point and get to hunting after a while any way.  If they are easily distracted by lingering scent of a gyp that was in heat recently well that's just any easy way to spot the culls.
