These maps are 100% free!  They are 1:24K equivalent topo maps for Garmin GPS units.  I have found dirt driveways and drainage ditches on mine and am very happy with it.  I had the Texas chip in an old unit that I lost and I have to say this map is as good as that chip, except the Texas chip allows for more manipulation on your computer.

Oh yeah, you have to have a blank micro S/D card in your GPS unit in order to load it.  Micro S/D cards are like $20 at Wal-Mart.

wait til you load it to your GPS, that takes about an hour and a half.  *Make sure you set your sleep settings on your computer off*

We had to cross a deep bayou this weekend, the map showed a road crossing the bayou about 150 yards down and around a bend.  We got to the road and there was a bridge going over the bayou.  Not having to swim that bayou with the gators= priceless!!!!

FYI, I have used both of these maps and I personally think that the South Central map is the better of the two.

     There is a detail setting in the map setup menu on the GPS unit.  When you load the map it is on the normal setting, you can turn up the detail 2 more settings.  I suggest you do this before you get in the field.  However when you are zoomed out having it on this setting will make it take a sec to load

Did you follow the instructions at the bottom of the original post?  You have to have MapSource installed inorder to load to your Astro unit.  

Try that, if that doesnt work then I will give you a call

Downloading now! What size sd card does it take to hold the south central map, anyone know?

The file is  620mb, plus around 10mb of loading software.  I would go with a 1gb card to be safe.

I have a 2gb card in mine and it has both the Texas and South Central maps loaded on it

having trouble..Im on a laptop and it says that no prev source of mapsource located?...I downloaded the 57.05 mb file and it still wont let me load it...the "extracting garmin web update" box appears then the MapSource web update box appears and says click next to install your software....when I click next it says prev map source not found set up will terminate..what am I doin wrong.

downloaded garmins basecamp and that helped me out..thx for the maps hope to use them soon!  ;D

Can you toggle between the two maps?  I live in LA, and louisiana is split between the south central and south east maps.  I currently have just the LA map loaded, but would rather do the south east and the south central maps.  Did you have to load them both at the same time on the blank card, or did you do one map then the other?

Yes I can toggle between the two maps, but I cannot overlay one on the other.  I will have to look at it tonight to give exact directions how to switch between the two. 

I am pretty sure that when I loaded them I loaded the Texas map first, the SC USA a week later on the same card.

I loaded all of AL, all of GA and part of eastern TN on a 1G micro sd card, stuck it in my Garmin and I'm lovin' it.......works like a charm....thanks for the info.

i just got my astro 220, how do i put these maps on it, in the first post it talks about a card you need but i cant find any place to put a card on the astro, maybe i'm just over looking something, thanks for the help

The card goes behind the battery. You need a "micro SD" card. I bought a 2gig from radio shack for $14.

No problem.  My buddy bought a card with the map on it for $25.  If you aren't exactly tech savvy, yopu may want to go that route.  It'd be $10 well spent.

I just loaded the south central US map this morning and it's great! The micro sd card cost less than 10 dollars and it wasn't too complicated to load. (even though my wife did it for me) ;) One word of caution. Don't even try to download the map unless you have high speed internet. I had to have my wife do it at her work because we don't have dsl and it would only load a little bit and then quit.

well i'm downloading the map now, was wondering, will it show the dog tracks over the map or do you have to switch over and look at the map by its self? thanks

That's how I did it.  No problems.  I have deleted the map and loaded a different one several times.  Neither the south central and south eastern have all of Louisiana on them.

Ok hog bit. After you load the map on the micro sd you put it in the astro then what?

The map loader program will say something like map succesfully loaded.  I close out the map loader.  Then I use a button that says saflye remove hardware before pulling the card (located in the sys tray).  I then put the Micro SD into my astro and turn it on.  Press the map button and there it is.

Wish i could help Heavensent, but I have never loaded one with a sd card adapter.  

You can see if the map is on the sd card by doing this:
With your unit turned on, viewing the map page
-press menu
-select "setup map"
-scroll over to the "information icon" (it looks like an "i" in a circle)
   *if you have a map loaded it will list the file name and the date it was loaded for the map files*

if it shows nothing or default, then you need to start over loading the map to the sd card

You can also put the card in your computer and go to my computer.  Find the card and open it to see if any files are on the card.  Be sure to start with an empty card.

I don't know what I did wrong. Shows the file on my sd card but nothing is different when I stick it in my gamin

Go to the map press menu  then set up map.  On the Map Set up scree go to detail.  There are 5 settings Most, More, Normal, Less, and Least.  Set this to most then go back to the map, and see if anything changed.

heaven sent, I used an sd adapter and downloaded the map into the microsd card.
I then put it into theback of my garmin. I turned it on and hit the map button and the maps were automatically loaded. It showed my exact location with street names and a nearby creek.

i was having the exact same problem, download the "basecamp" app and use that instead of the map source to load the map into the sd card.

basically a map of what you downloaded from the net shows up. You have to click on small squares and highlight the area you want to load onto the card. then click the button and wait for it to load.
pop it out and put it into the gps and that is all

Loading the maps on my unit right now. Took me a while but I think I have it figured out. I do think they could stand to make it a little more user friendly. They should know us huntin' types aren't computer programers.

nope it hacked me off so I gave up on it for now. Prolly gonna but the micro sd into the garmin and try it that way when I get some spare time but for now I'm doing alright without it but wouldn't mind having it eventually.

i wanna get this topic kicked back off! LOL Has anybody run into this trying to load maps - Question:  How do I load maps to my new Astro gps?

The Astro product ships with Trip and Waypoint Manager software that allows the unit to connect to a PC for the transfer of waypoints, routes, and tracks. To be able to download detailed maps to the Astro, one of our MapSource products would need to be purchased.

They want you to buy a map before u can load any free ones. I have also tried to get the louisiana topo map loaded from the gpsfiledepot. I got it downloaded to my computer and it shows up in mapsource but when u try to get it it says there is a problem with this garmin application and wants u to copy the message to a clipboard and email it to garmin tech support? Just wondering if any of yall have ran into this and how u got around it? Also i have not tried to just put the file on a micro sd card and load it that way. If you do it that way do you just put the file on there and put it in your 220 and go with it or do you have to go thru mapsource still??? One more thing when i go to my map information page nothing at all shows up in it. Is that the same way everybodys is to start with? I would have thought it would have had some simple city map in there or something of that nature. Thanks

Anyway i have finally got maps to load i had alot of trouble getting them to load into mapsource but finally got it. Only thing is i really don't like how u can have tons of individual sections to select on/off in the garmin. i got the whole state of louisiana and there are like 72 different sections in that one file alone. Is there anyway to just have the map as a whole and on one file to select on or off?? I also wanted to put the south central and southeast on there but don't want a billion different files to have to sort thru. Oh yeah also was trying to check for garmin updates and said there was no updates for mine and wanted to see if i could upgrade my collars but don't see how to do that. Was wondering if any of yall have done this and if it helps or hurts any?? They cut out or loose signal all the time no matter how far they are and gives false signal or location from time to time. Not really complaining i mean they are good but was just wondering if the upgrades make them any better??

ok no takers i guess? LOL shulda started a new post i guess. but anyway figured out how to update collars also even though it said mine had the latest version i now know how to do it. Only thing left is trying to figure out how to get the whole sections on the maps in just one file on my gps. i dont wanna have to go thru a million sections checking which ones i want displayed. I WANT  like louisiana as one file the south central u.s. as one file and the southeast u.s. as one file and thats it pretty much for now. Any advice on how to do this would be much appreciated

Your garmin should have came with a CD Trip and Waypoint Manager.  First download this to your PC if you dont have a CD you can download from the links provide on this post MapSource.

Once MapSource is downloaded then go to what ever map you want like Texas Topo download this to your PC when it is finished downloading click on run and it will automaticly go to your Trip and WayPoint Manger which is called MapSource  you now have downloaded on your pc into your Map Source.

Once all this is done, click on  your MapSource and go to Maps click on Texas Topo are the map you downloaded it will come up on the screen then what you got to do is magnify to were you can see Texas pretty good then put your cursor on one corner of the Texas map and hold it down and and cover the whole Texas Topo map, now hook up your USB cord to the slot on your pc and then connect the other end to your garmin 220,  dont turn the unit on it will turn on itself , then you hit Transfer at the top ,  then click send to device and the Garmin 220 will turn on and it will start downloading what ever map you have downloaded on the net .

yes texas i have done all that im just talking about how it is in the garmin when u go to the map information page all the different little sections in Louisiana show up and its a long list that i have to scroll through and check/uncheck just the ones i want at the time so it will load up faster. Just wondering if everyone elses are like this or does it just say louisiana?? or south central?? or southeastern??(on the garmin map info page after maps have been loaded to it) and not have all the different little sections to check on??
