Title: 1st timers
Post by: jon on August 18, 2013, 09:28:25 pm
Got a catahoula from my buddy Jamenson up in Oklahoma yesterday  that he was nice enough to give me after my mt curr got killed last week and so i took her and my almost 4month old mt curr/plott pup out this morning with another buddy's dogs and I was pretty pleased already with the both of em.. buddy threw his plott on my hood so I decided to test my luck with mine.. that dang pup rode up there without any problems what so ever along with my catahoula.. none of the 3 was tied down or anything my 2 just took right to it... well we had a couple of races but never got one to stop but was still a fun morning..
post a picture tomorrow Photobucket keeps going to blank screen on my phone >:(

why not? I tote my young pups on hunts with me all the time.........I don't turn em loose at a bay that young but its nice to get em accustomed to everything and be able to deal with/correct a 20lb dog instead of a knucklehead 60-70lb dog down the line......by the time mine are ready (or willing) to start running with the big dogs (6-8mths depending) they already have the obedience side of things down.....just makes it easier in my opinion  ;)

That parts understandable Justin...the hunting part was what I was more referring to.

We normally put a pup down when we cast. A) there's no better teacher than experience and B) it's fun to watch a puppy play hog dog! "Casting" over to there "trailing" that scent over to there. Taking some time to build its confidence in the woods. Makes for a fun day. You should try it.

Your right Jon...learning by example is great. I'm not telling anyone it's wrong to start a pup this way.
I just think 4 months is early to be on the ground running with the big dogs....at that age a pup doesn't even have all its motor skills going good. Typically they are still a bit clumsy. Another thing to think about...if a 4 month old pup is lucky enough...and only gets rolled up by a hog and not killed....it can seriously set them back.

I think 6 months is fine with some but not all pups.....but 4 months is pushing it.

JMO so it don't mean nothing, lol
