Before I even ask this question, I realize it is kind of a goofy question. But I ask, is there a way to make dirt not so dusty!  The  reason I ask is that all of my dogs are kept on chains, and of course they have worn down any grass around and have the requisite circle of dirt around their chain areas. When I go to feed they all start running circles and kick up one heck of a cloud of dust.  Not to sound like a whinebag, but I was wondering if there was anything to add to the dirt to keep the dust down. I know from my dirt track racing days that there are things to add to dirt to help it retain moisture.  I just don't know what they are. Anyone have any input on this??

Setup a sprinkler for a few mins before you feed

Laundry detergent mixed with water and sprayed over dirt will change the molecular structure of the dirt and make it stick together not allowing the smaller dust particles to be stirred up,one spray down will last a couple od weeks but in extreme sunshine and heat it may only be a week. A better alternitave is to get some river sand and spread it around the width of their chain area about 3 inches deep,it has cleaner heavier granules than dirt and no dust.

Just to add......the reason I know about the detergent is we used to spray the driveway down with it in a watertruck at the ranch I worked at. The bossmans wife took it upon her self to take over this chore and after a month he was cussing her because of the dust,she said she was doing exactly the amount he told her and when he checked what she was using it was "fabric softener"!!!! He said"well babe,we may be dust....but the ranch sure does smell pretty"!! I never laughed so hard in my life!!! ;D

 there is a chemical we call elephant snot, bc it has the consistency of snot. it comes in a 175 gal tote and is poured out on the ground. it is an anti erosion agent, it hardens the ground up. ill get ahold of a guy at ft hood and get the name of it. I will c if he can get a tote of it.

Sand ain't dusty just sandy.

sand will get in your dogs eyes

So does the dust and dirt, along with any other contaminents associated with hunting or just normal dog life

Somethin else u mite could try is pea gravel

just usea clay, is there any lawnscaping or nursery places around you where you can buy a truck bed of clay. just rake it in with a hard garden rake, then do the sprinkler thing that was said and it should pack in.... just an option

Lots of people use sand and no problems. I added sandy dirt to my kennels. They drain better and not as dusty. I wish I had used clean sand but I got my sandy dirt free.

On chains with sand the poop dries fast and you don't have to clean it because the chain does the work for you.

   san ain't dusty ?  lol come over to the house and help me dust this place daily   lol  this sugar sand may not be dust but it sure does settle every where  . I have to wear a mask just to go feed the dogs  . when the cows are just walking in the pasture out back they kick up dust shoulder high . at night you can't use a flash light for the dust in the air   lol  . I think I remember granmps talking about something called the dust bowl a few years back being the reason they left Oklahoma   lol  . .   I just try and use water regularly but it hasn't been working to well here as of late  .

Thanks for the replies everyone. I know it's probably a whiny complaint but I get tired of walking into a dust bowl every time I go to feed the dogs and was seein if there was anything that could be done.  Also for the dogs sake there is a good layer of soil that settles in their water bowls between changes. I live on a sandstone hill so my soil is pretty fine and sandy, except for the sandstone rocks that continuously float up in my yard. It's not bad when its raining, but 2-3 dry hot days and its back to a dustbowl.

Jimmy, what ratio do you mix the detergent and water?

Charles, would like to know what the name of that stuff is, but I am in NE OK so gettin a tote from you might be an issue.

And the clay idea had crossed my mind as well. My inlaws live on the river bottom with some good heavy clay soil. So I had thought about getting several bucket fulls and tilling it in with the dirt in the chain areas.

Now I ain't talking about that ain't what I was talking about. I am talking the heavy corse stuff. The dirt I got has sand that is too fine but better than I had. I am just wanting some cement floor kennels like all them rich people on here have. ;D
