Title: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: chads7376 on October 05, 2013, 01:12:43 am Met a coon hunter a couple weeks ago and he was telling me about how he was getting two miles consistently out of his DC40's. He preceded to show me his antennas which were coax cable.
I decided to put this to the test. I put coax cable on two collars (same length as factory antenna) and tested them against two collars with "long range antennas" and two stock collars. I put them all on my front porch at the same elevation (about a foot off the ground) and jumped in the truck and drove two different directions two times each way. I found that my so called long range antennas are no better than the factory antennas. I also found that the coax antennas did out perform both the factory and long range antennas by .15 to .25 miles. I didn't get the 2 mile range that was told to me but I will take an extra 1/4 mile any day. The coax I used is 6 series 18awg and used liquid electrical tape to seal off the ends. Thanks. Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: Bowhunter1994 on October 05, 2013, 08:00:40 am Pm me on how to make one.

Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: grittydog on October 05, 2013, 10:38:02 pm What type of coax cable did you use? Was it a solid conductor in the middle or stranded. The cable we use at work is different than the Coax cable use by the cable companies.

What does it look like? Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: chads7376 on October 08, 2013, 12:37:09 am See the last pic... I made a small loop with the center wire. the size of the threaded part of the screw that holds it in place and tightened it down. I have ran them on two hunts now with no problems

Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: chipolariverman on November 11, 2013, 05:27:13 pm Got one made and gonna try it one night this week. I'll post my results when I go.
Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: ED BARNES on November 14, 2013, 07:27:43 am I MADE ONE OUT OF COAX, SEEMED TO NOT WORK VERY GOOD WHEN THE DOG GOT 300YDS OR CLOSER BUT WORKED GOOD WHEN DOG WAS FARTHER?
Title: Re: DC 40's and Coax Antennas Post by: chads7376 on November 14, 2013, 10:14:15 am Just an update. I still have the coax on two collars. On an average I am still getting slightly better range than a factory antenna. No issues to date.

I'll post my results when I go. Sorry for the delay on posting my results for this but been tied up. Personally I have not got the range out of this antenna that I do the factory ones. BUT I know or have read that the length has to do with the frequency and I have not made mine any longer than the factory one. All of the aftermarket antennas that I am running are longer in length. I will try and make another one that is longer and see if that makes any difference. On another note I am still running the one that I made several times a week and it is holding up with no signs of wear/tear. |
