Title: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 10, 2009, 11:16:36 am I spent the better part of this past weekend helping my neighbors erect their barn frame. Mandi is taking pictures of the progress, and once the barn is completed, we will have a photo album made for them. Here are some photos from this past weekend.
The ground floor is going to be used to stall a few horses, and have a tack and feed room. The second floor will be a 40 x 80 dance hall air conditioned, with a bar. ;) Total area under roof is 56 x 80. The first floor has a height of 9',just enough to run a tractor down the aisle. Peak of the barn is 27', the framing is 4x4 square tube, blasted, primed and painted. At this point my neighbor figures he has 200 man hours in the barn...with many more to come :) Here I am getting some tubing unloaded off the trailer that will be used later in the project. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0372.jpg) Welding up the framework. The barn was fabricated at my neighbors fab shop, then hauled in sections to the barn site. Once at the site, we lined up the three pieces that make each section, and welded them together. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0368.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0376.jpg) Once the sections were assembled, we used the cherry picker to lift them and set them on the piers. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0384.jpg) It took a little convincing on a few of the anchor bolts, but nothing a 5# sledge could not straighten out. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0412.jpg) Once each section was bolted to the piers, we then welded in a 4x4x20' horizontal brace between each section, tying them together. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0448.jpg) Here we are 80% finished with the main section of the barn (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0479.jpg) This is the main section set in place, it still needs 10 more 4x4x20 pieces welded in between each section before the c-purlins are attached. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/Garcia%20Barn/DSC_0537.jpg) If you look to the left of the barn, you will see the 16' section being added to the west side. This will be open tractor storage. Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: matt_aggie04 on August 10, 2009, 11:27:10 am That is gonna be nice!! Be sure and use those down riggers, they are there for a reason....I speak from expierence :o That is going to be really sharp framed the way they did, keeps everything clean and neat.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 10, 2009, 11:34:50 am Chance,
I started sweating when I walked out the door in the am, and I never stopped until I went inside after dark... Couple times I got real hot...got to thinking about Bryant's FIL that heat stroked last week, so I got a glass of cold water and took a 5 minute break in the shade. I figure when you can feel your pulse throbbing in your head is when it's time to slow down a bit ;) Matt, The outriggers were used any time the boom was being used... The picker was in motion in one of those pictures, is the only reason they were up. I used the picker a few times, but I sure don't like it much. Give me a tractor, skid steer, dozer, or backhoe and I can make things happen. That picker had me nervous. Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: matt_aggie04 on August 10, 2009, 11:40:23 am Yeah that definitely looks like a good winter project there!!
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: aladatrot on August 10, 2009, 12:19:06 pm It's already in the works to have Kevin Fowler or Roger Creager booked for the first barn party once it's completed. It is going to be a real process getting it done, but we were all pretty impressed with the progress made this weekend.
Cheers! M Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: matt_aggie04 on August 10, 2009, 01:16:07 pm Mandi, good job on the pics by the way....they look good. Is this a weekend only project or are they doing it till its done?
MG Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 10, 2009, 01:36:06 pm Matt,
They will be working on it each evening and weekend until it is completed. He expects to have all the framing and purlin installed by first of next week. The following week the R panel will be installed. Beige with a green roof and trim. The front porch ( 20 x 40 ) as well as the center aisle will be flagstone. It's going to be a pretty nice barn for sure. Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: nosightsneeded on August 10, 2009, 01:55:47 pm Circle Yall sure did have a big task on you hands. I put up a new privacy fence up and dang near died. Makes me feel like I got a little less accomplished over the weekend. ;D
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 10, 2009, 02:15:11 pm Nosights,
I forgot to mention that in addition to the barn raising, Mandi and I installed new overhead lights on our round pen, pulled out a 50' section of wood/ cattle panel fencing, and then installed a 50' pipe and panel fence, and built and installed a 6' gate made of 1" tubing and 4x4 panels yesterday morning ;D Midway through the job I ran out of oxygen, so I cranked the machine to about 300 amps and cut my saddles with a 1/8" rod :o Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: nosightsneeded on August 10, 2009, 02:18:15 pm sounds too much like work.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 10, 2009, 02:25:35 pm Quote sounds too much like work. It's ok, I get to take it easy Mon-Fri 8-5 ;D As you can see from the pics, I could stand to do a lot more physical work...Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: nosightsneeded on August 10, 2009, 02:34:09 pm kinda funny how that works there was a time not 5 years ago I was a lean mean machine. Now I sit behind a desk well you know the rest.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: uglydog on August 10, 2009, 02:51:19 pm WOW that is gonna be nice! Yall were busy this weekend!
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: FcHogDog on August 10, 2009, 05:56:10 pm Alot to do in one weekend
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: TrueBlueLacys on August 11, 2009, 11:25:55 pm I know nothing about construction, but Mandi is taking some great pictures! Shooting in the bright sun like that is not easy, plus she's catching some great moments. Technique + eye = photographic win ;D

Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 17, 2009, 09:25:37 am I will get some new pics up soon. This past week has been spent welding out all the steel that we tacked in place. Tomorrow the perlins will be installed, and by the end of this weekend the barn should have all the r panel and trim installed.
Julie, It sure is nice having a decent camera around, but I find myself wanting a little more out of Mandi's camera. I found a lens that we want, but then saw that it cost more than my first new vehicle :o Do you ever run a multiplier to get more zoom, or does the quality suffer? I was talking to a guy about getting pictures further out, and he said he uses a 1.6 magnification. Sounds like a better deal than buying a new lens, but only if it works... lightningh, They want to get Kevin Fowler...I told them if they can't get him scheduled, they really ought to go see this guy. http://www.lonestarmusic.com/artists.asp?id=1510 He puts on a great show, and is very entertaining. One of my favorite "concerts" ever, just behind seeing Chris Ledoux in a very small venue. Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 17, 2009, 12:11:07 pm Here are the pics of the barn as of 8/14/2009
The west side framing us up, and the arches for the front porch are being installed. The barn is now 100% welded, and awaiting perlin and panels. One of my favorite "concerts" ever, just behind seeing Chris Ledoux in a very small venue. Sounds cool. there is a lot of great music that will never make the radio.... I cant hardly stand to listen to the radio at all anymore... Its just a joke! Kevin fowler has some good ones, and i bet he woudl put on a pretty good show! I really like Jason Boland, Randy rogers band, Stoney Larue, reckless kelly and a few more... Oh and my latest is Drive by truckers... If you havnt heard some of them look em up on youtube! that is some real music! ;) Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 31, 2009, 10:51:49 am Update: The R-Panel is installed, the ridge cap needs to be replaced, as the metal company bent it to the wrong pitch, but other than that, everything went on great. Still need to install some windows and the roll up doors.

Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on August 31, 2009, 10:25:17 pm Straight up poor white trash, but they are nice people, so we don't hold it against them.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on November 30, 2009, 10:19:14 am Concrete work has started. Between each section of concrete will be a ~18" section of flagstone.
(http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0586.jpg) The area to the right in this picture will be an outdoor kitchen, with a limestone fireplace/ grill (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0588.jpg) Center of this section will have a 6' diameter flagstone star (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0590-1.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0593.jpg) Notice the slope in each section, so that the stall/kennel area can be washed out. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0595.jpg) Far left corner in this photo will be a full bar, and restroom/shower area. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0602.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC_0603-1.jpg) Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: matt_aggie04 on November 30, 2009, 11:12:49 am I can't wait till that thing is finished, it is turning out really nice. That flagstone is gonna be a real nice touch!

I can't wait to see how the flag stone looks when they get going on that.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on December 21, 2009, 11:25:49 am Installed 10,000 pounds of flagstone and poured the driveway last week. They had to pick up another 5k in stone so the flagstone work will be finished this week. Still have to put the grout between the stones, it will be a dark brown grout.

Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on May 20, 2010, 10:59:17 am Quote What they could not afford the 10 burner model? ;D Actually, their son is on a cook off team, and he asked his dad to help him build them a fajita cooker for a cook-off last month. When they ran across this 8 burner setup at Sam's Club, it looked like he could buy it for what it would cost him in time and materials to build it himself. Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Eric on May 20, 2010, 11:45:30 am Did they put any insulation in.... it makes all the difference.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on May 20, 2010, 12:29:45 pm It is insulated at the roof. I am not sure if they intend to insulate the walls on the first floor of the barn. The second floor, dancehall, will be insulated, then lined with cedar.
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: RockinW on May 20, 2010, 10:47:32 pm I suppose all ETHD members are invited to the party right ?
Title: Re: Barn Raising - pic heavy Post by: Circle C on May 20, 2010, 10:57:32 pm sure, the parties at their house are pretty serious... Couple weeks ago they filled up 3 acres of parking, then lined the street on both sides. 5 bucks buys a wrist band for the booze, otherwise it's usually byob. Last party went through several kegs and a case of margarita mix for the margarita machine. ;D it's always good times at the neighbors....and I don't have to worry about a designated driver, just walk home...
