Title: 05 gelding heavy NCHA pedigree
Post by: aladatrot on August 11, 2009, 03:03:53 pm
"Cooper" is a 2005 sorrel gelding whose pedigree reads like a who's who of NCHA money earners and legends. Peppy San Badger, Rey Del Peppy, Colonel Freckles, Doc O Lena, and others. NCHA money earners are abundant.

There is no question what he was bred to do, as he was a dream to start under saddle and has just taken every task I've ever given him in stride. He is super cowy. Although I have used Cooper to check cattle (yes he does want to face off to cattle), his primary job has been that of a hunting mount. Mounting up at midnight on a full moon with a pack of hunting dogs, stifle deep in quicksand when we accidentally got into a deep river bottom, climbing embankments, swimming rivers, crossing palmetto thickets with palmettos getting under his belly and legs, easing through hill country pastures with mesquites and huisache bristling underneath him, and fighting through East Texas green vines that threatened to tie us both up - Cooper has been a great mount, and has never balked at any situation I have put him into. Cooper is easy to catch when pastured, he leads, clips, ties, bathes, and loads quietly in either slant or stock. He backs out slowly and quietly without issue. No trouble in a stall, and he is as well no trouble for horses he is turned out with (no aggression). I have never shod him, just kept him trimmed. Cooper is young and not for a beginner just yet, but he is heading that way. He has a lot of heart and just doesn't argue with what his rider asks him to do. I wouldn't call him a finished horse, but he most certainly has some good hard miles on him in some treacherous terrain. I've seen miles and miles of Texas back country from Cooper's saddle. Easy way of going, stops correctly without bit pressure, yields to legs so you can pretty much leave your reins slack. I ride him in a loose ring snaffle, and I'm not plum worn out after a 30 mile day. Cooper has no trouble at all leaving other horses to go ahead and scout out a path, and he as well has no issue being the last one in line. There have been plenty of occasions where someone else's horse would balk at some deep water or muddy creek crossing and I just maneuvered Coop to the front of the pack and led the way with the balky horses following right behind him.  $2,000 obo  (713) 550-2625

waylon,

those are the only photos I have of the colt, he seems to be behind everyone else in almost every other photo I have. I will get some respectable conformation shots this evening so folks can check out how he is put together.

I'm selling him because I want a horse with a famous brand on his shoulder  ;)

The horse doesn't have a whole lot of wither on him, but he dang sure has more than he had when he was a real youngster. I have a saddle that was handmade in the 1940's that fits me like a worn out old sneaker. That saddle has been with me through several horses, and I absolutely refuse to get rid of it. The saddle doesn't fit my modern cutting bred horse, and it is far easier for me to replace a horse than that saddle. The old timers say you can replace a horse, but you can't replace a good saddle. That's where I'm at. The saddle in the photos fits the horse, but I have trouble taking Chris' good saddle into the woods to get all beat up. Not to mention, it leaves saddle sores on my arse  :-\

Cheers
M

Here are some photos we took this afternoon in the pasture. This gelding is on 100% native grass pasture right now with no feed. He maintains this condition without grain but I do keep him dewormed.

He looks good Mandi, maybe I need to just trade mine in on a newer model and about 60 days of training  ;D  I would imagine that even with 30-45 days he would be a smooth operator.....

You know, for the first time in months I sat on the deck looking over the round pen and I just wished I was on a horse. It sure is nice with the horses on pasture down the road, but if coop had been here last night I would have been on him. I'm working omoving the two aussie stragglers and I'll likely bring cooper back home so I can tune him up. I'm always so impressed with his attitude and willingness even after months of not riding. I just need to get the dogs out of his stall

I loaned him to a day hand friend of mine to use for a day to use to pen some cattle. Other than that, I have only checked cattle and hunted off of him. I don't rope, that would likely be a bad thing for myself and anyone around me since I'm doing well to tie my shoes in the morning. The horse knows cattle are his gig, and he definitely has drive to "do something" with them, but for me he is a method of transportation in the woods. I know, it's a waste of a good horse  rolleyes

Sorry I missed the question on size and weight. He's pretty typical for cutting/reining bred horses at 14.3 and guessing 800 lbs. They tend to be more compact than your big ranch geldings, but they can also move like a cat to get after a cow. Compact has been great for me getting under tree limbs on him.

Cheers!

Cooper is real quiet going, never looking for stuff to spook at.
Mandi, didn't you have Cooper at that trail obstacle Challenge in Angleton?

Yep, sure did. I forgot about that. We completed the obstacle course after only being saddled a few times. Like, literally, the colt wasn't broke. He sure faked it rather well doing that Extreme Trail Challenge, didn't he?

I'm located in La Porte, TX. Between Houston and Baytown.

Cheers!

Yep He did great for a super green colt he was better than most horses that have been ridden for years, I hardly believed you had only been on him a couple of times. Somewhere I got apicture of you & him at that extrem trail challenge

Heads up, may work trade + cash on this gelding since I'm half way looking for a ranch cutting saddle or a nice built or semi custom roping saddle.

If  I had the place right now I would be heading east.

Seriously, I doubt you'd need a few....

The other day chris was working on the gas weedeater while I had cooper standing with his lead laid on top of my saddle on the stand. He was revving up that weedeater not 5 feet from his butt while I proceeded to clip the colt's ears with no twitch. He is seriously that agreeable.

I know I'm going to regret selling him some day, but for now I need to sell him.

Cheers
