Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: charles on November 07, 2013, 03:15:21 pm I grew up on a .223 and .243 and nvr had to track a deer. Shoot them high in the neck closer to the head and u can walk up and put ur foot on them. Iv also had a .270, loved it for cavity damage and longer range shots compaired to the .243. Its shooters prefrence

Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Kid7 on November 07, 2013, 03:56:12 pm Personal prefrance. I've killed all my deer with a .243. I'm sore sure more accurate with a .243. Out of 7 deer hunters I hav on my place 2 use a .270 the others use a .243
Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: KevinN on November 07, 2013, 04:32:59 pm Choice between those....270
Long shots or short shots? I grew up with the lever action 30-30....100 yards or less (typical stand/still hunt/stalk distance) it's deadly. Ideal for walking. 270 is used by....shoot... Millions? Hundreds of thousands anyway. GREAT for deer size game but if I'm paying for a guided Elk/Ram/Bear hunt...I don't chance it....that's just me. I go any of the long range .30 caliber 243 will do a fine job on deer size game....just chose the right bullet and watch your shot placement. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Tusk Hog on November 07, 2013, 05:11:36 pm Have shot a 270 since 1984. Won't knock the 243 either. What I like about the 270 is the varity I can load it. Several years back I loaded some 100 grain bullets with low velocity powder. Love it here in central Texas. Load 130 grain and max the powder and go any where for the big animals.
Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: kerreydw on November 07, 2013, 05:53:54 pm 243 has kille lots of deer so has he 270 I will keep my 270 it will do more for me. I've been using a bullbarrell 22-250 that my late uncle and cousin built for me killed some nice deer with it.
Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Reuben on November 07, 2013, 06:27:54 pm 25-06 is very nice...I shoot a 7 mag and my 4 brothers shoot 7 mags...
but between 243 or 270 I will have to go with the 270... Title: Re: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: AnotherRunner on November 07, 2013, 07:19:51 pm . 270, it puts em down
Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Curcross1987 on November 07, 2013, 07:35:15 pm 243 is hard to beat I don't need anything bigger I killed a Moose with a 243 and I watched him fall over with a shot threw the heart

Sure some are better than others, but shot placement is always key. I'd venture to say that the .22 and 30/30 have killed more deer than all other calibers combined Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2 Title: Re: Re: 270 or 243?? The high velocity shocks the spinal cord, disrupting the nervous system flow, blows out the wind pipe and arteries. Even with my 270 and 308, if i have an extra sec to line up on the neck, i put the round there. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? My personal preference inbetween those calibers I would have went with a 25-06. To me that is the best all round caliber for most folks. Shotgun Arkansas Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Lance on November 07, 2013, 08:34:25 pm 270

Out of the different deer rifles I have shot, 308, 270, 7mm-08, & the 7 mag, my favorite hands down is the 270. I have a buddy who shoots a 22-250 & I have seen him loose many deer altho I would say it is his shooting rather then the caliber. For years I have used a marlin 30-30 for bear hunting & just this year upgraded to a Rossi 45-70. I have also seen hunters have to shoot a bear several times with a 45-70. Like said above, shot placement is everything. The gun you feel most comfortable with, is the one you should go with. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Hunt the Grunt on November 08, 2013, 08:18:11 am If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the 270, but I don't think there is anything wrong with a 243. I like them both. My fiance shoots a 243 and is deadly accurate with it :o It was her first gun though and she's wanting to upgrade now. I'll probably end up getting her a 7mm-08, which I like better than the 270 & 243. I personally shoot a 300 Ultra Mag now when I'm not hunting with my bow.
I grew up shooting an old iron sight 30-30 top ejection that has been passed down from when my grandad had it. My grandad, my dad, both of my younger brothers, and myself all shot our first deer with it. We sanded it down last year and put a few layers of stain on it and a clear coat and it looks as good as new. My little 9 year old brother actually shot his first deer with it about 3 weeks ago. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many deer that gun has killed. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Taylor S. on November 08, 2013, 02:29:33 pm im a big fan of both rifles i love my .270 but i usually take it on longer ranged hunts most of the time its my .243 but if i had to choose between the two i'd have to go with the .270

Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Hoax on November 08, 2013, 10:20:45 pm I love my 270. I have shot quite a bit with it. Mine prefers to use the 150grain and can take down anything in North America. Unfortunately I don't get to hunt as much as I like but I know I would rather have a gun that will kill what I'm shooting at and feel good knowing that it has stopping power further than I can shoot accurately. It does have a bit of kick and can make you sore after an afternoon of shooting but that isn't often.

I bought a rem 710 for my son (at that time 6-7yrs old) to give to him in a couple yrs. the mistake was getting the lite weight 710 plane jane model with no recoil pad. after 30rds at the end of the day testing distances and getting it zeroed, my should had thrown in the towel. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Amokabs on November 09, 2013, 02:36:08 pm 270, esp if u reload, you can load a 100gr that dont kick any more than a 243, or load it up as hot and heavy as u want. Much more versatility.

More then likely poor shots. Shot placement is key with any caliber. I know I have tracked more deer and seen more deer lost to bad shots from larger caliber guns then 243. I remember one group who were out that were all shooting 300 win mags and gut shot everything or just wounded the deer because they could not handle the gun, but yet a 12 yr old girl with a 243 dropped two does in their tracks. Caliber does not make a difference. The differance is what can the shooter handle accurately and is comfortable with. Also know your weapons limitations. A 243 is not going to be good out past a couple hundred yards. It will do the job but there are better rounds for that . I have a 270, and 308. My main gun as a kid was a 243. Of all the guns I still wished I had the 243. Easy on the shoulder and fun to shoot. Of the two rounds listed it depends on what your hunting for and distance. As well as what YOUR comfortable shooting. All of us can give recommendations till we are blue in the face, but YOUR going to be the one shooting it all the time. Go shoot both and put several boxes through them both in one day and see what YOU want to shoot all the time. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: hillcountry on November 11, 2013, 02:12:11 pm Some were bad shots and some were trying to shoot to far . We baned 243 because the bucks at a distance seem to soak 243s up and not bleed, most guys talk big at camp and cant hit ass wth both hands when looking at big bucks at 350yds and farther.

Sounds about right. Those are the folks that no matter what caliber they have shouldn't be hunting LOL. They need to stick to video games lol. The longest I will shoot a 243 is maybe 125- 150 yrds nothing further, but then I don't like taking long shots with my 270 or 308 either, BUt thats just me. I know I will hit where I aim, but just don't like the varibles at a distance. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Black Smith on November 14, 2013, 06:22:47 pm 270 WSM for me I really love this gun. Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Easttex91 on November 14, 2013, 09:57:03 pm I like my 22-250 but I shoot everything in the neck so no chasing for me. If I wasnt shooting at neck I'd use 30/30.
Title: Re: 270 or 243?? Post by: Reuben on November 15, 2013, 04:41:08 am I like the 22-250 the best...my wife and kids and 2 of my grandsons have killed many a deer with it...most drop in their tracks and only one ran off with bad placement of bullet that I can remember...
I still say go with the 7 mag....it is flat shooting and retains more energy at longer distances... |
