Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: KevinN on November 12, 2013, 07:47:35 am I've never used people meds on dogs. I've heard ibuprofen is not good to use.
Cajun...you use it often? Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: charles on November 12, 2013, 08:26:02 am Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Bryant on November 12, 2013, 09:32:09 am 1/2 a childrens benadryl for allergic reactions. Acetaminophen (tylenol) is toxic to dogs and can cause death. Canine digestive systems dont tolerate aspirin very well. NSAID drugs designed for dogs (Rimadyl) are a much better option, however not available over the counter.
Dexamathasone is a steroid...totally different, and should NEVER be used in conjunction with a pain reliever. Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Melonhead on November 12, 2013, 11:52:28 am tramadol is the best I can find, need a script for it though. common enough to get from family or friends normally
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Muddogkennels on November 12, 2013, 12:51:34 pm Benadryl / if u could find it sulfameth/trimethoprim Antibiotics works really good but not over the table and really strong for dogs so only use when needed on bad/naste wounds...

Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Cajun on November 12, 2013, 06:17:10 pm Yeag, I have used ibuprofen quite a bit. I have given them up to 3 pills every 3 or 4 hours for pain & inflammation.
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: josh54 on November 12, 2013, 08:06:47 pm Dexamethasone is a anti inflammatory and if the pain relief needed is due to inflammation then it will help with pain. It can be used to treat many different conditions. Google dexamethasone for dogs it will tell you the conditions you can treat

Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: KevinN on November 18, 2013, 09:47:23 pm Eh...Justin I had a bulldog get cut up pretty bad. I used up all my leftovers so I was just checking around. I didn't see anything I liked in the responses so he's off the pain killers. Anyway....Wouldn't want him to develop a dependency ;D
He's got about 5 days left of cephalexin. But I don't think that will be enough so I'll need to refill it...or at least see what the Doc says. Young Emmett was messed up pretty good but he's still alive and seems to be recovering nicely. Tough sum BIATCH! I like having a good bulldog that can take a whoopin! Hope he comes back 100% for you!
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Reuben on November 19, 2013, 04:48:31 am KevinN...I never use anti-inflammatory on my dogs...maybe I should...but if it doesn't look too serious I just use Cut-Heal 2 or 3 times a day...if it looks pretty bad I use cut heal and also give antibiotics for about a week...that combo works great for me...I continue cut heal until it looks like there won't be any infections setting in...
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: Reuben on November 19, 2013, 04:50:04 am I try to stay away from the injectable antibiotics..
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: KevinN on November 19, 2013, 07:47:54 am He was gut cut....along with about 10 other pokes and a couple slices. I used a hose on him. Used an antiseptic spray, and stapled him up. Started him on injection penicillin and leftover pain killers and anti-inflamatories when I got home. Those ran out in about 3 days though. I've got a Doc that is nice enough to get me SOME stuff without an office visit. I told him the deal and he thought 500mg of cephalexin twice a day was necessary. I've got another week of that. Emmett is up and around...eating...bowells working. Some days you can't even tell (by his actions) there's much wrong with him. Others he limps a bit but still waggin his tail happy to see me. Of course he pulled his staples out but all cuts/pokes are healing. The gut cut is the biggest concern of course. I'll take a close look at it in a few days and see what kind of progress we've made.
On another note...my understanding of administration of penicillin was wrong. My Doc said there are 2 types. The most common...I got at tractor supply...Brand:Durvet - Penicillin injectable - penicillin g procaine injectable suspension. It is SUPPOSE to be administered - 1cc per 10lbs under the skin twice a day. The other (which I don't remember the name - starts with a b I think) is administered at 1cc per 30lbs injected into muscle once a day. That's what my Doc says anyway...so... Anyway...as good as Emmett is doing I'm not gonna feel "safe" until that gut cut is TOTALLY healed. Emmett is a young dog at 14 months and was starting to show me something special....some SERIOUS potential. I guess the question after he heals would be..."will he still work the same?" What are some of y'all's experiences with this? Bulldog cut down...has he came back with the same work ethic? I can only hope. But he's surprised me so far and if I had to bet money....I'd say he'll come back with the exact same skill he had before...but maybe even better BECAUSE of what he's been through. Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: MrsLouisianaHogDog on November 19, 2013, 07:57:25 am I'd have to say that in most cases, a bulldog will come back just as strong, if not better, than before .
Hope he heals fast for ya. Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: justincorbell on November 19, 2013, 08:42:33 pm Kevin, i'll bet a 20$ bill right now that it won't slow him down much at all....... When theyve got it, theyve got it! I wouldnt worry about it, get him back healthy and get back in the woods.
Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: KevinN on November 19, 2013, 09:31:15 pm Never dealt with a gut cut before. How long should he stay out of the game?
Even after all signs of the cut were gone...I was gonna keep him out another couple months just to be safe. Make sure that lining is healed nice and strong. Title: Re: Pain reliever/anti-inflamatory Post by: justincorbell on November 20, 2013, 01:19:25 am Once the cut is healed id tote him as long as he is acting normal
