Title: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: mod93dirt on November 25, 2013, 10:04:25 pm Anyone here used one of these before? I'll admit I can't sharpen a knife for jack. I've tried everything. Steel, stone, diamond, ceramic; I just don't have a knack for sharpening. The only thing I did halfway good with was the Lansky setup that holds the knife and uses the guide rods, but it still wasn't great. The belt sander work sharp gets great reviews on every website I look at, and after watching the demo video it looks pretty fool proof. Just wondering if anyone here ever used this setup?

Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: WayOutWest on November 25, 2013, 11:01:09 pm I have one and it does a pretty good job, the only thing you have to watch is if you keep pulling the knife all the way thru the point get rolled up. Not a big deal on a kitchen knife but not ideal for stickin.

Just wondering if anyone here ever used this setup? that's one thing I've never been able to do is sharpen a knife lol. Idk why It just never works. People that have tried to show me and make it look so easy and it shaves the hair off your arm. Then I try and it's more dull than it was to begin with.Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Chris D on November 26, 2013, 07:43:01 am I'm in same boat I just can't figure it out now if I got one that's got a good edge on it to begin with and old man give me this ceramic rod deal that came out of a transformer and I can make couple swipes on it like chefs do with their still rods and it gets razor sharp but like I said that's if it has a good edge to begin with witch I can't seem to do myself good luck
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Cajun on November 26, 2013, 07:45:08 am When I was a kid, I literally spent hours sharpening knives on a whetstone. Got pretty good at it. Just time consuming. Then went to a Lanskey & they work good but still time consuming.
I got a work Sharp knife sharpener a couple of months ago & like it a lot. Every knife in the house is sharp. Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on November 26, 2013, 10:54:20 am from the specs of 3500ft per min, that's moving awfully fast on those lil wheels. I would be afraid of over heating the blade and loosing the temper, especially if the knife is so dull it wont cut hot butter and the grit ranges of 80, 220 and the a big jump to 6000, dont offer much for slowly honing the edge down.
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: WayOutWest on November 26, 2013, 11:00:50 am It hasn't been an issue on mine. If you kept the blade in one place it might tho.

Charles...U b kinda smart dude... 8) I am interested on all the comments because I am buying myself a nice one for Christmas... Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on November 26, 2013, 01:29:17 pm I would like to see 1 in action before I would even think of purchasing anything not hand powered. I guess im used to the wet stone and steel and been doing it like that for over 25yrs, and can shave with it after im done, but it wont matter how good of an edge u put on the knife, if the knife wont hold it long, it wont matter, but if the blade is good quality, I wouldn't wanna take the chance on ruining the temper from something hauling a$$ across the blade, but like wayoutwest, said if u hold it there to long, it would over heat it. I guess im just old fashioned, Rueben, let me know how it turns out for ya
Title: Re: Post by: Peachcreek on November 26, 2013, 05:36:51 pm I bought one a couple months back. By far the easiest sharpest edge i have found for sharping... as said above dont drag your knife all the way through or it will round your point. I found that out the hard way on my cold steel oss :( but i was able to take some time and fix the point with the work sharp now the knife is a tad bit shorter.

Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: muleskinner on November 26, 2013, 08:29:59 pm I love the sharpener. It sharpens all our knives but one. I tried to sharpen a kbar knife and it wouldn't work. This perticular blade comes straight down on the sides and the tapers inward. The angle finder on the sharpener wouldn't allow this blade to hit the right angle. Other than that it has worked well.

That is my favorite knife for packing on a hog hunt...good for chopping 2" limbs and sticking hogs but not worth a dang for slicing meet...too thick... Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Black Smith on November 27, 2013, 08:58:34 pm I am like Charles I like the steel and wet rock method guess I am just lucky been sharpening knife since I was a kid just like doing it!!
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Dedication07 on November 29, 2013, 08:06:50 pm I think I'm gonna get one and try it out read on it and seems like a pretty good deal
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: muleskinner on November 29, 2013, 08:20:14 pm Not sure what is called. It's a kbar is all I know. There at every gun show and military surplus. Good knife but doesn't work for me with the work sharp .
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on November 29, 2013, 08:22:15 pm It should say usmc on it if its the kbar that reuben is talkn bout.
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on December 02, 2013, 12:51:44 pm I went to cabelas today to replace the ammo my son n I shot this wkend and ask to see the sharpener. he brought it out, plugged it in and did his thing, and it sharpened descent, 2x faster than I could do with a stone, but it could not get the last 1/4" of the blade nor the tip sharp.
he was using a 25deg angle guide and after lookin at it, I guess im holding around a 26-27deg angle, bc there wasn't but a minute amount of old angle showing. I wasn't impressed enough to drop $80-150 on 1, but I guess if I couldn't sharpen a knife enough to cut hot butter, it would work for me. Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Circle C on December 04, 2013, 01:31:57 pm I have countless stones, a Lanskey system, and have been using the Work Sharp for a year or two now. I don't ever intend to go back to the stones or Lanskey.
Couple of quick passes and my Eye Brand 99yl is shaving sharp. Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: mod93dirt on December 26, 2013, 01:07:35 am Well my lovely wife got me the sharpener for Christmas and I must say I like it! I started out with a few of my cheap pocket knives before I tried my good ones. I started with the medium belt and will admit I wasn't as impessed as I hoped to be. It got them sharp, but not what I was hoping for. However, after the med belt, I switched to the fine belt and holy cow, I don't have a hair left on my left arm. Between pocket knives and kitchen knives, I probably sharpened 20 today. And got them much sharper, much faster than I have ever been able to before!!

Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on January 26, 2014, 07:55:38 pm Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener, this one is less than 75 dollars... Work Sharp WSKTS-KO Knife and Tool Sharpener, this one is for 150 dollars... anyone know why the price difference? If memory serves me correct, when i was inquiring bout them at cabelas, the guy the main diff was the more expesive 1 comes with an adjustable angle guide n a couple minute add ons. Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: mod93dirt on January 26, 2014, 09:12:11 pm Adjustable guide, adjustable belt rpms, wider belts, and more grit variety on belts are the big things if I remember correctly.
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: charles on January 26, 2014, 09:16:08 pm Thats it, adjustable rpm. I was thinkn that, but wasnt for sure.
Title: Re: Work Sharp knife sharpener Post by: Reuben on January 27, 2014, 04:37:10 am thanks for the responses and input...I did notice that the $150 sharpener weighs twice as much...sounds like I will buy the better one...
