Title: Blue Tick Hounds
Post by: MrsLouisianaHogDog on December 17, 2013, 11:13:47 am
Does any one here run Blue Ticks on hogs? If so, what do you admire about them the most? Just looking for some insight on the breed. Thanks in advance.

Who was that one guy...cutter creek? From Florida? Can't remember.

Anyway...I have 1. He's young but progressing nicely.

He's is yet to strike and as of yet...silent on track. So far he is only open when there is a break or if the trail is VERY hot.

Being as young as he is...it's hard to say what I like about him the most. I believe once he gets things lined out it's going to be his nose I like the best. He will take a track and run it faster than I expected...always heard they were slower than most hounds. Still could be true but his speed is good with me.

I absolutely love his bawl. As long as he isn't just open on every step I'll be happy.

Thank you Kevin for your insight, I appreciate it. Where did you aquire him? I know these guys are used on coon a lot. I was curious if there's anyone with an established line that has just been used on hogs....I know nothing of this breed's prominent lines....

that was cutter bay and he runs or did run Cameron bred hounds . the camerons are the big game lines used for bear , cat and hogs . but all in all just another hound breed and hunt like other hounds . the blueticks for the most part are a colder nosed hound and that is the main reason they are accused of being a slower hound . it's not because they are a slow dog they will just grub out an old track and work it till it warms up enough to run it at a decent speed  .

He came from Lance Epperson in Athens, Texas. Found him on this forum but he's out of straight coon hound blood.

Took a lot longer to get started than my curs but I like him.

she's a real good track and tree dog , but I don't need another hog dog lol  her first litter were some hog baying fools when I bred her to slim . two of those pups went to south texas but I never heard a word back from the feller that come and got them . I told him if they didn't work out I'd come and get them or send him is money back , I guess they turned out . the boys I gave the big john pup to lost him around the tyler lake they said he run one plum out of hearing of course no collar with info on it and I don't guess they ever went back looking for him .

BIG JOHN

Had this guy for a while.  LOVED his bawlmouth.  He literally could vibrate your entire body when he opened up during feeding time and you were within 10 feet of him, lol.  He was silent on track, seemed to have a good nose on him.  He struck a few, just wasnt as fast as my other dogs.  He struck about a 150# sow with my walker hot on his tail before this photo, he opened up and everybody flew, my Bleu dog and Lb gyp caught it.  Aboslutely loved listening to him. Had to give him to a friend because my (now) exhusband couldn't stand his mouth.  Wish i couldv'e kept him but at least I get to hunt with him still on occassion  :)   Don't know how he is bred but folks have said he looks Gascon bred because he is so tall and big, he is about 80# lean.

if I were a Catahoula lover the first thing I would do is find the best bluetick I could find and add 1/4 bluetick to my cat's...  8) :)

Been hunting with really great hog dogs.2 wer blue tick.one English hound. One leopard. All the hounds wer tight on track with one of the blue ticks being totally silent.ive have never heard him bark unless he was looking at a hog.all these dogs wer go find an stay all day kind of dogs.have seen sum other blue dogs that wer pretty nice to.if u don't mind a hound try u sum. Just not for every one.

well Kevin...it is an idea I have had at one time...but it is only a hunch...

I think that the color pattern fits...with the right dogs of course...I think it would put a little more hunt and nose in the cat and tone down some of that cold nose in the bluetick...blueticks have some grit and lots of hunt and cats have a ton of grit and bay pretty tight...I think selecting the right pups from this cross could possibly produce a dog that is better for hog hunting than either breed...
