Title: What's wrong with his face?
Post by: Texashog26 on January 07, 2014, 05:25:47 pm
So last week my bulldog and a buddy's 3 legged puppy ran off. Thought they were gone for sure but the bulldog showed up and no puppy. By the looks of the bulldog we are pretty sure they got on a pig. Since the bulldog showed up it looks like the muscles in his face are pulled, strained, etc.. it seems like they a permanently tight. His ears stay purked up and has a hard time opening his mouth all they way. It looks like its pullin his eyes closed. I took a picture and you can kinda see how is eyes look..(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/08/enepu9y7.jpg)

Hard to see because the pic is fuzzy...does he have small punctures all over him?

No punctures anywhere. And I thought when they ate frogs they kinda foam at the mouth alittle? It's been like this for a couple days.

Check inside of his mouth real well, check all his teeth and under his tongue.

I would give him Benadryl right away in case he is having an allergic reaction to something....

Tetanus can do that to a dog, make their faces look all drawed up and tight

Are there any dogs around that could have fought him? A catchdog I had a year ago got out of his pen one day and got tangled up with the neighbors German Shepherd a 1/4 mile down the road. There wasn't much visible damage on my dog but his head swole up bigger than that the next day. That dog never showed any aggression to other dogs so I'm assuming the GS started it, probably just protecting his yard, but I'll never know.

What is tetanus? And its like he was caught for along time and the muscles are still tight. Kinda crazy if he don't get better I guess ima take him to the vet.

Its a clostridial bacterial infection, its anaerobic meaning it doesn't need oxygen to thrive.  Dogs can get it from a deep puncture or something, not necessarily from anything metal, usually a week or 2 prior to showing symptoms.  It can be treated if in early stages with ampicillin, tetracycline, or metronidazole.  We have treated some with antitoxin but with mixed results because of it being derived from livestock (or human) antibodies so it doesnt always bind like it should.  It may be wise to take him in to a vet asap, even if its not tetanus.   Its not common for dogs to get tetanus, but since it lives just about anywhere including dirt, and with what looks to be like scratches on his face, who knows what he got in to.  Wish the best for his recovery.

Ya I think the scratches are from the brush, this is definetly something to do with the muscles. It's like everyone of them from his neck forward is drawn up. Super stiff! He acts fine but something is definetly wrong with the muscles. Prolly Gonna run him to the vet tomorrow to see what it is.

Took him to the vet turned out to be tetanus, got him on treatment now.

Good deal on getting it diagnosed and treatement started. Wonder if he scraped himself on a rusty fence, or nail or something.....

Well when he came home I had to use my pocket knife and pliers to pull a piece of bone outta his mouth. it was wedged in between his back teeth on the top and he had a thorn stuck in between his 2nd and 3 rd toe, it was going straight in and was about 3 inches long. She said he got it from one of the 2 for sure. Also told me it don't have to be metal, she said tetanus lives on just about anything outside.

Well he seems to be getting better already, the stiffness had moved down his front legs. Really couldn't move anything from there forward when I got him to the vet. When he left he loaded in the back of the truck just like usual. That was Friday and he is steadily gettin better. Thanks cutnshoot, never woulda thought of it, hadn't seen in a dog before.

Tight muscles was definitely a sign...lost a show steer to it once before...
