Title: Astro v. Alpha Making the switch
Post by: jpuckett on January 14, 2014, 09:47:40 pm
Just wanting to know who all here has made the switch to the alpha from the garmin astro and what y'all all think of it. I just switched and have hunted the alpha now 2 or 3 different hunts and I'll haveta say I'm impressed. I love that you can track handhelds. It'll track up to 20 devices (either collars or handhelds) and knowing where all our dogs and the hunters were in the woods really is a valuable tool.

i have the alpha now and not to many complaints from me . the tracking of your buddys handheld is a great feature and you can also text each other as well from the handheld . but i have never got that 9 miles of distance it claims it usually gets a bit jacked up at 1.2 miles .

If I'm on top of my truck I could pick up my dog at 2 miles in and out. Not past that though

Still think it's a great system and worth the money. Especially in trash breaking  while hunting. Not having to fumble around with two handhelds is pretty nice

im seriously considering making the switch from my 320 to the alpha if for no other reason than being able to collar all the wired up young dogs i've got at the house now so I can get a decent nights sleep lol. the red ryder works great but only when I can see em and they got educated to it pretty quick......sure would be nice to be able to grab the handheld without gettin out of bed and light that ass up when they get rowdy hahaha

I usually run my collars all the way down before I start em charging again and they were going on 27 hours! Still had 2 of the four bars on the battery life indicator. I wish I wasn't hunting tomorrow morning so I could see how long they'd go for but I gotta make sure and charge em up for tomorrow. Also bayed on a cow yesterday and these bad boys worked wonderfully!!

I love mine as well. Only thing I'm worried about is if the screen breaks

Chad, make sure and update the hand held and the collars. Mine and a few others I know were the same way, once you do the update it works great.

I was one of the others and after the updates it's worked fine since

I hooked the receiver up and think I ran the updates right. It says garmin communicator plugin up to date version 4.1.0.0 . Does that sound right? Also how do u update the collars? Thanks for the help. C white
