Title: Doing it Plott style- with open mouth hounds
Post by: hoghunter71409 on February 02, 2014, 07:10:31 pm
Saw some rooting this am about 7:30 am.  Turned three plotys loose and kept two in the dog box; ready to turn loose later on a running hog.  The three plotts I turned loose went out 300 yds and opened.  Went another 200 yds and sat this barr down.  These "in your face" type plotts bayed him and never let him loose.  Dogo was released 50 yds from hog and caught all ear.  I guess he was about 250.  All four teeth were good and sharp.

Reuben- I didn't get dog pics this time.  I kept telling myself I need to get dogs with hogs for a pic.  We stuck the barr in a small hole, it was all we could do to drag him out the hole.  I walked dogs back to truck and dogo was cut.  We were so focused on figuring a plan to get the hog out, we never got dog pics today.  Catching the hog was fun.  Finding a buddy that lived close by with a 4 wheeler that could help us out and butchering was the hard part.

Nice hog Jon. I have heard a few rumors that you could not catch a hog with open mouth dogs without a all day race.

hillbilly- no I did not cut him initially.  I did contact other guys I know to check and see if it was their mark...it was not.

Here is a pic of Louee (this pic was taken a few months ago):

Here is a pic of the other two plotts on this hunt (Red Male is Rocky, the saddleback brindle gyp is Marley).  This pic was taken two days ago.

And the last dog is Joe.  He was in the dog box and did not get in on the barr.

SWEET Jon!!   You gotta love them Barrs,  they always have good teeth and get fat.  YUM YUM!!  All the hounds look great but Ol' Rocky is a eye-catcher.  How's he bred?

Rocky is a dog.  I was fortunate to get him from a guy on this site a little over a year ago I think.  He is a White Deer Kennel dog.

Caught a little 80 lb pig today.  Its hard to get pic of a bunch of dogs and a caught hog in the middle of a thicket and briars in my ears.  Here is a pic of dogs today at the campground after the hunt.

How far do they run before the dogs stop them?

How far do they run before the dogs stop them?

I think you are asking how far the hogs run.

Last week the hog never ran.  Dogs opened a couple hundred yds from his bed and shut him down at his bed (or 38 yds from where the garmin initially showed treed).

Yesterday, little 80 lb hog ran circles in a thicket for 45 minutes before the dogs caught him.

After the 80 lb hog, a bigger hog (I only saw his track) ran for 4 hours before he lost dogs.

Every one of my hunts is a little different.  Some hogs run more than others and sometimes dogs shut the hog down and sometimes dogs flat out get beat by a runner.  Hogs, weather, terrain and other varriables impact the hunt.

Well thanks man.  We going to hit the woods again tomorrow.  Leaving my #1 hound at home.  His pads are heavily worn and the first layer of skin on the pads is gone.  I thought about taking him just for rigging, but I think the pack strengthens over time is #2, #3 and so on are given chances.  Also, asking the bulldog to Soldier up and get his game face on.  He still has a cut from last week but I may need him on a rank boar or another barr.  My dogs bay to tight and are too ruff to think I can shoot over them.
