Title: what is your defintion of a hog dog?
Post by: devildawg86 on February 13, 2014, 06:07:46 pm
(Disclaimer: Due to the winter storm  coming thru this part of Ga., couped up and bored as hell.) Just for the sake of some spirited  discussion, what do u consider a hog dog. Ex., u can take a real dog put him n hog sign and at the end u have your quarry. Does style, terrain, genetics etc.,make a dog. Some dogs cannot transition from one environment to another. Just askin...,.

There is no right answer for everyone.

A true hog dog to me is one that will find a hog if one is to be found. He will run that hog as long as it takes. He has no interests in no animal other than a hog.

Other than these points everything else is subjective to the owners

"You can't catch hogs with loose dogs in MY area cause they'll just run and run. You need ROUGH dogs where I hunt!"

"You better have some loose baying dogs if you want to catch hogs in my area. To much pressure and they'll run!"

"Tight baying or loose baying don't matter...you gotta have endless bottom in your dogs if you want to catch dogs in MY area"

"You gotta have small dogs to get through the thick stuff if you want to catch hogs in MY area"

"You gotta have some leg under your dog and run their lungs out to catch 'em in MY area"

Lol....A REAL HOG DOG is a dog that you are able to catch hogs behind on a regular basis......period.

Can my dogs produce in Louisiana? IDK....but that's not where I hunt.
How bout Arkansas or Oklahoma....can my dogs produce there? Don't know....it's not where I hunt.
S.E. Texas? Don't know....NOT WHERE I HUNT!
What I do know.....I CAN catch hogs WHERE I HUNT.

So.... If they aren't HOG DOGS....what are they?

Hey Kevin have u ever had the desire to prove ur dogs beyond what they have already accomplished.

But I would like to add!!!!! Lol

I'm NOT satisfied with my dogs. There are things I'm working on. Attributes I would like to see improve.
I think I'll always be "tweeking", lol.

yea Kevin...you can tweak until the dogs won't quit and they either die from heat exhaustion or maybe over tweak on grit and then you lose a good dog to a hog now and then...then you tweak the other way...maybe...  ;D

Lol...made that little addition before I even saw your post DEVILDAWG.

I don't know about " proving" anything.... As I said...I'll ALWAYS be "tweeking" my dogs, but that's for ME....no one else.

This here is the Major thing that gripes my butt. When I hear a man say things like this  :

If your dog aint getting out there a mile, mile and a half he aint hunting !...........Bull Chit !  I have found just as many are more hogs withend 250-500 yds than I ever had at a mile , mile and a half .

If your dog aint got big bottom he aint a hog dog ...........Bull Chit !  It dont matter that he has found stopped bayed and caught 500 in less than 20 miles !

If your dog breaks a bay he is worthless.....Bull Chit ! I guess the other 1000 he has found stopped bayed are caught mean noting ...............Bull Chit !

It just goes on and on man !

anything is possible. It is possible that a dog can be trained to hunt different game if that is what the handler wants

A lot of people think just because a dog runs out there and bays a hog every now and then it's a hog dog but that's not usually the case. A hog dog is one you can put down and If it's been a hog there it's going to find it somewhere and be bayed next time you get within hearing distance of it regardless of where it has to go. And a hog dog at the end of the day when your ready to go you don't worry about the hog everyone is trying to catch that dog because he has done put on a show. And another way to tell when you have a hog dog is when you and people you hunt with go to doing some serious culling because everything else is really just in the way of this dog. That's when you have a hog dog.

I prefer an esteemed scholar dog.  Preferably one with scholastic papers reflecting his higher education.

We typically travel to the edge of the dense forests and discuss the preferred methods of defeating our chosen quarry ......
The elusive and majestic Bo hog.

I take under advisment of any concerns that the dog may have for approaching such a dangerous and vile creature.

If the assessment by the dog seems futile ....we depart the forest and return to our warm cottage where I promptly serve warm tea and cookies for my beloved canine companion. We then chat into the evening as we watch the sun set...about the gyps that got away....or those wild registry parties back when he was getting his papers.

Or...

I kick em out and if they dont disappear to go do their job......they disappear.  ^-^

What I want in a hogdog...........simple.........Do Your Job!

All my dogs are hog dogs.  I dont have what most of yall would consider a super star "hog dog" but I got 4 dogs that when the door on the box opens they can get out and catch hogs. They  make one hell of a team.   To me they are all hog dogs.

When working on hogs, a cur dog that can be taken to the woods by itself to wind, find, stop, and attempt to "anchor" any hog. My dogs and I are close range hunters.
