Title: Most let down bays u ever seen
Post by: LAhogger84 on February 13, 2014, 08:32:28 pm
Let's face it. We've all had dogs trash if they havent your in denial or lying to yourself one.  What's the most let down "bays" that you have ever been to.  So we been hunting a while and we get back to the truck n all the sudden 3 dogs throw their heads up n scald out. They go out bout 200 yards n open up baying so we take off to the bay with the catch dogs. We got closer and hear the most gosh awful sound u ever heard.  We get there and they done caught a goat. We ain't got goats roaming around n our woods here. We get them off that poor goat and they roll out like goat dog champs and get on another. Caught him by the nuts. Thats prolly the craziest "bay" i ever been to not to mention a box turtle.

No clue where them goats came from. Middle of a thicket no houses or nothing.

Bayed a beaver in a dry slough. Unknowing it was a beaver we fired the bulldogs. Caught beaver! Bayed a wounded deer in a pond. Fired bulldogs not knowing it was a deer, luckily the deer was a faster swimmer than the bulldogs.  That was the only deer that dog ever ran.

Most let down bay I've ever had was wen I pull up to a feeder that went off 20 minutes before I got there and there is no corn on the ground and some fresh tracks. Turn 2 puppies loose leave the old ones in the box and the pups (9 months old only seen a few hogs) throw they're nose on the ground and burn out 300 yds and HAMMER DOWN. I was so happy proud of my pups til I got 60 yds and hear a coon fight

Ole ybmc dogs have caught and stretched a grown coyote once.
Second weirdest was caught and stretched a coy dog inside an old chicken house.

Guess they ain't fond of their primal cousins.

Also.........they are both a lil trickier leggin than a tame ole Russian bo hog.

Um... Cut the bulldogs loose on a porcupine.... That was a fairly aggravating deal there. But those damned cur dogs, being hearty and all, instead of breaking themselves off of them. They just waged war on those quilly boogers. By the time that month was over we had found zero hogs and pulled quills from eight dogs and killed four porcupines... That quality was somewhat endearing... But A LOT annoying!! They actually were gritty enough to believe that no way that dang porcupine was gonna win THAT TIME!!!!

There are some funny stories in here lol. I don't have any flat crazy stories but I do remember one time a couple years ago we were hunting my old deer lease outside nome, we were roading the dogs when I noticed my smoke dog was winding pretty hard but he never would take out.....this went on for about 10 minutes as we were easing along, all of the sudden he burnt out to the right and started baying not 20yds into the woods and the other dogs went to him......... We knew something wasn't quite right almost immediately when dogs started coming back to the road but ol smoke was hammerin so I eased in to find my "trash broke" dog baying an orange house cat in the top of a little pine tree, I started laughing mainly because there aint a house for at least 7-8 miles from where we were at and smoke was steadily loosing his mind over this cat lol. I gave him a 1/2 ass cussin still trying to quit laughing n hollered at him to get out and come on and off we went, never did see that cat again........That dog still looses his mind over a cat  ;D

Last year when the corn crop was tall I was hunting my mountain curXpit cross and a couple birddog pups that were a little under a year old at the time. We pulled up to the farm and hog tracks were everywhere, I mean everywhere! I figured it would be a good spot to break in the pups. We turned loose and they let out with noses in the air except for one dog. That one dog shot off straight in to the corn went a few hundred yards and sat down hammering, man I was pumped as it would have been his first hog. The other two dogs never turned back once they left. We eased down the corn row with the bulldog, unsnapped him from about 40 yards and CRUNCH! A dadgum armadillo in the middle of a corn field. I've been fortunate though and not ever really had much trouble with armadillos except for that time (Knock on wood). That dog learned pretty quick dillers hit back pretty hard when I show up lol.

Another time I've been let down at a bay would have to be about a month ago. I was doing a guided hunt with a guy that just wanted to film everything. We pull up to the farm with a few good size tracks leaving an old peanut field, we cut the dogs loose and it wasn't 5 minutes. The dogs went down the edge of the field, shot into the woods about 15 yards, and went to hammering. I had two grown dogs and two pups out. We ease up and can see the dogs baying but what they were baying was behind a tree. The guy was videoing, but something didn't look right to me. The pups were baying hard but the two grown dogs would bark a time or two and then start sniffing the ground and looking around. So I sent the bulldog he goes around the tree and nothing. I run in and they were baying a dead sow  :-[. I couldn't help but laugh but I was a little embarrassed as well. I slap them on the head and they took off, went 200 yards and sat down again. This time it was a boar hog about 200lbs lol so they made up for their little mishap. But I guess if they are going to do crap like that I would rather it be on a dead hog than a diller.

We had an old gyp open up one day in a creek bottom so we go running in there to find her circling a dumb turtle baying. My puppy was lookin at me like is she retarded lol. At the time I didn't think it was funny but now I think its hilarious.

I've been told by several people that a armadillo smells like a hog. Idk how true that is.

I went to armadillo bay yesterday. Bayed up then hushed. No squealing thought they killed some babies or had a big one cautht gps said all 4 was bayed not moving.  Get there and they done crushed a armadillo. Good looking dillo I'll admit. Kinda brindle looking. Lol. Big let down.

I almost forgot. We bayed a poor looking coyote in a ditch one day that was too weak to get out of the hole he was in. Luckily we saw what it was before we sent the bulldog. lol

actually turned bulldogs loose to a bay, as we got closer there was the most god awful racket coming from a hollowed tree, I mean a for real spine tingling sound. At first I thought a bobcat but when we got there my lil game bred pit had managed to get inside the hole of this tree with a javelina! we somehow managed to reach in and grab the bulldog by the back leg and drag him and the javelina who came unwillingly in the cd's mouth, luckely my buddy stabbed it as it breached the hole, and poor lil red was covered in lil poke holes all over!

Wasn't on the hunt but have a buddy that had a walker that was bayed over a mile away. He had some big wigs on the hunt with him and was excited to get em on a hog. They ran the whole way there and the dog was hammering down. When they got there they see that the dog was barking because he fell in a hole and couldn't get out. They were pretty let down lol.

These are in order of frequency: armadillos, coons, coyotes, jackasses, and turtles, but my all time favorite is some puppies baying an old black garbage bag hung up in a bush that was puffing up and down as the wind blew in it.

That trash bag one reminded me of a time we got on a nasty hog that cut our old leopard gyp, she was bleeding real bad and the hog broke and when we came up on her a few hundred yards later she was baying an old tire leaned up on a tree.

Had a Patterdale baying his nuts off, got there to see just his arse sticking out of a hole in the ground, lmao! Had to yank him out. Dunno what was down there but he was determined to get it. First and only time he's ever done that. Can't fault him for being a terrier, lol.

sounds like the jagds I used to own. When I put them on the ground I would tell whoever I was with something along the lines of "we aren't just hunting hogs anymore, we are hunting whatever unfortunate critter those little monsters run into first."  ;D

Gotta love a terrier!

Had a buddy give me an old rcd we was roading them my little spot dog and the rcd took off into the brush went a ways and started baying the other dogs went to them then heard this sqeal/cry that sounded a lot like a hog so we turned the cd loose was running to the bay and the cd dog was coming back we was like what the heck got to the bay and that old rcd had caught a llama whith the other dogs still baying got in there and it started running at me cut that old dog up pretty bad trying to stomp him finally got him off and the llama came up to me like it was thankful I got the dogs off

Was hunting on the river one night was headed back to the truck when all the togs hit the woods and start barking not really baying they was running around like they was chasing pigglets waited for a minute all the dogs got in one spot but they all quit barking but one so we turned the catch dogs loose head to them get there and they had bayed bout 20 or so aoudad on a cliff the dogs couldn't get to them thankfully

In the swamps of alabama we have palmetto flats that are so thick you can not see 2 feet in front of you.  Go into a bay and the dogs are baying in the palmettos and there is nothing there but the smell of a boar hog.

Well I guess I spend too much time hunting with trashy dogs, because I have walked in to some sure enough crazy bays. I once walked in to 4 armadillo in one day. That was with two bmc. Another time I walked into a big black bull that happened to go over the fence into the next pasture. This got me sent home after a 7 hour drive to Hondo tx. I walked into a bay to a few different Catahoula's, one was a black 55 gallon drum, one was a box turtle. Last month I walked into a bay and a hound cross dog was baying a big stump. Another not so good bay was a mans fighting chickens on tie cords. I also walked into a bay where a man was shooting my dogs because they were baying his hogs :) now you see why I like close to medium range dogs because this is just some of the things I have walked into.

I have some good friends that went over on the Mississippi River to help a hunting club get rid of the hogs.First thing that morning, their dogs bayed in a real thick willow thicket. They got to the bay & one of the guys that was first to the bay told them to turn the bulldogs loose cause he saw a big black hog the dogs had bayed. they cast the 2 bulldogs and the fight started. They didnt hear any squealing but heard one hell of a fight in that thicket so they run in to leg "the big boar" but when they got in there it was a bear, not "boar" and the bulldogs had him caught but the bear would take his front claws and rake the dogs off.I think that battle went on for quite a while because nobody was brave enough to catsh the bulldogs and get them off.I just wish someone would have videoed that rodeo!!!

Bayed a boar in a bull gator den in the side of the river bank last year. Luckily it was cold enough all he could do was hiss. Cds wouldn't go in the hole, i guess the gator smell kept them out thank heavens. He was about 11-12 ft long. We got video for you non believers. Lol
