Title: Trashing dog
Post by: LAhogger84 on February 17, 2014, 07:18:19 pm
I got this 19 month old 3/4 plott 1/4 bmc long range dog. Hunts his butt off. He decided he likes running armidillos now. He got on 4 today and woulda kept on if I let him. Today there was a unusual amount of armadillo out for some reason. Anything other than shock collar I can break him?  I whooped him good at the diller holes. He got the point on the last one maybe. Not a big fan of shock collars if I don't just have to. And how far have u guys seen a diller run???

Get a 55 gallon drum with a lid to it, put it at the top
of a hill put him and the dillos in it and close the lid and push
it and let it roll then open it and watch him run!!!! >:D

Just kidding!!!! I think shock collars are really the way.

Don't understand why someone would rather hit a dog than shock him.... Takes way less effort... And you don't haveta get mad to do it. On top of that the biggest point is the dog doesn't lose trust in you because you beat em. U do it right it truly thinks the diller is shocking it. People that beat the hell outta there dogs without at least trying to shock first irk me. Only heard of one dog that literally didn't get the point with a shock and had to resort to beating it. If you use it right it's a wayyyy better solution. I think some people just like hitting dogs. I love my dogs. Rather not hit em

Had a dog that guy said was great but he needed a shock collar on to keep him from trashing. First time in the woods found four Dillos and caught on when I found em. Had the collar all the way up holding the button down and all he would do is yell while he was caught. Never regrouped or anything so put the boot on em to get em off. Couple more times this happened, next week the worms are good. A cull is a cull is a cull... He might have been a good strike dog if there wasn't a dillo in the area but he was trash dog if there was one around. And dang sure don't want my pups learning that crap!

I heard from some elder men that dillos smell just like a pig so i wouldnt worry to much just as long as he still finds pigs

I'm with you both on this. And then folks wonder why their dogs won't come to them when they call them. Just don't understand it.

Yes, I agree as well. I was thinking that as I was reading responses.

There are situations for both but there is a line that I won't or very very rarely cross but never to the point of trust being lost or any cowering.

Maybe beating is the wrong term. Need to watch how we use that anyway. Discipline works for animals and humans alike!

I've been known to cut me a switch , and spank me a hound   lol   but it takes less of a whooping to teach a hound than it does a child . but when I bought my first e sytem the spankings ceased . now if we could just get the guberment to let us put them on children , society would be better off   lol  .

A fresh dead Dillo and some shock therapy will go a long way in breaking him of the habit...then freeze the Dillo and repeat the procedure about 2 more times in the next 2 weeks. ..you can do this in his kennel...

Don't give up on the dog, a dog that is trashin on armadillos is a dog that is HUNTING, the war is already won if you get your hands on a dog that naturally goes out and hunts, you just have to figure out how to fight the little battles to clarify to him WHAT you want him to hunt.

I personally am a firm believer in the saying " a trashy dog is a hunting dog without refinement."

Just my opinion of course.  ;)

I like that. I got several unrefined dogs. Some worse than others.

No reason to have to cut a switch when all you have to do is push a button. ?

i like that too. unrefined... well after the deer running i did this last weekend we are about to do some refining hahaha. Alpha is the best invention known to hog hunters ever. can't believe I ever lived without it... Dogs thought the deer did it hahaha
