Title: 3 bay truck box project Post by: jfork on February 23, 2014, 07:50:09 pm Loading and unloading my old steel 3 bay by myself and with other often became a chore so I was inspired to build something lighter! I left enough room between the box and cab for a tool box I plan to get in the future. The top frame work is built to bolt a flush boat seat mount for a top rider (shotgun man) when running hounds at our lease. The top rail folds flush with the doors for easy loading. Stainless hinges and locking latches. Only thing I'm lacking is skinning the dividers an adding some pop up style tie downs and rigging hooks to the top. I like how it turned out!

Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: hoghunter71409 on February 23, 2014, 08:40:44 pm Ive seen a lot of nice boxes. But that is what I think of when I think of a three bay box!!!!! Very nice. I really like the tubing instead of the aluminum sheets. Only thing I cant see is what seperates the bays? It looks like a piece of sq tubing is diagonal. Doesn't seem like this would keep dogs apart.
Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: jfork on February 23, 2014, 08:48:15 pm Yes you are right I haven't decided on the divider material yet. I have seen some expanded aluminum that looks nice but may just go with some sheet. I think plywood would ruin a good thing ha
Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: charles on February 23, 2014, 08:50:35 pm Looks good. How much u got in all that aluminum and is it welded together or riveted?
Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: jfork on February 23, 2014, 09:06:00 pm Charles I'm estimating about $500 in total material: aluminum, stainless hinges and locking latches, rivets, filler rods, and welding gas. The rivets were used to attach the latches, hinges and diamond panels to the doors only the rest was welding using a miller tig machine.

I would sheet dividers with plate instead of expanded metal just so you don't have to worry about any squirmishes between dogs. And your right, plywood don't belong on that nice looking box. Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: jfork on February 24, 2014, 11:50:55 am Thanks for the compliments guys.
Justincorbell, I can't take all the credit. My brother has most of the skills. I came to him with what I wanted to do and he designed the box using a computer program (he's a mechanical engineer) and then we built it from the plans he made. Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: stickin swine on February 24, 2014, 07:05:38 pm I believe your the ol boy that picked up my leopard puppy on main line road in there. If that was you I just wanna say thanks I thought that pup was lost for good that day. My cousin picked her up from ya and described a truck like yours and I remember seeing That truck in there. I appreciate it.
Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: hoghunter71409 on February 24, 2014, 07:10:56 pm Yeah that is to fine of a looking box to use plywood. You could easily break some aluminum sheet pieces and weld it in. I like the expanded stuff because it allows for air flow, and if your in FL, you know about trying to keep dogs cool. What part of FL?
Title: Re: 3 bay truck box project Post by: jfork on February 24, 2014, 09:08:36 pm Hoghunter I'm from Polk county. Mulberry..
Stickin swine, yes that was me. I had a dog in that block and was holler her out when you your pup came to me.. We went up and down that road trying to get close to my dog and the pup follow so I figured I'd see if she had a number.. Glad you got the dog back!
