I was talking with some very lovely people this weekend about what items I'll need to have in my doctoring bag once I get fully into hunting.

I've been looking online and it seems most hog doggers use staples, which makes sense. However, from my little bit of medical training, I know that for deep muscle wounds in people you can't use staples.  So my question is it worth packing both staples for your every days cut, but also a suture kit for any deeper lacerations which require the muscle to be closed in addition to the skin.  Or at the point of that type of work needing to be done do you just close with staples and get to a vet ASAP.

Also, I'm  sure there's tons on here but never a bad idea to talk about multiple times, what does everyone carry in their doctoring kits?  Anything special you've found works well. Has anyone ever found that IV's will keep a badly hurt dog alive long enough to get to a vet?

I'm thinking of buying one of the premade kits from Wild Boar USA and supplementing some other items or extras.

I would get all the stuff on your own. The stuff I use the most is penicillin, gentamicin , staples,suture,forceps,scissors,tweezers, gauze, pedialight, dex,lidocaine, vet wrap, staple remover, iodine

we use alot of staples and stitches through the summer, if i get a dog with just a little flesh cut ill go ahead and staple it up so it will heal faster cause i dont like hunting gashed open dog, but alot of dogs will pull out staples and leave stitches just according to where they are at, that blood stop powder seems to work good when its the right time to use it and handy to have. and vet wrap is handy to have. but usually i just take a staple gun on my fourwheeler with me and if i know its a big hog ill put it in my pocket to take to the bay and that will usually get me back to the truck if i need to take them back there for further work.

I believe they both have their own place in a kit and you should have both for certain circumstances

almost always...not sutures and no staples...sometimes a vet...

I spray on cut heal twice a day maybe 3 times a day...and 500 mgs of antibiotic capsules once a day for a week to 10 days for deep muscle cuts or punctures...

I agree, I use sutures when dealing with a  muscle cut to help mend it back together and I use staples + vet glue to close up skin cuts. I can say this for certain, staples will help heal up a skin cut 10x's faster than just hydro theraphy and vetericyn alone. My smoke dog got cut down bad back in feb. and I used a combo of staples, glue, hydro theraphy and vetericyn and the cut ( over 7" long and deep) healed up way quicker than his most recent cut (2 1/2-3" skin only) using only hydro theraphy and vetericyn (i was out of staples).

With a bit of reading online and a steady hand you can damn sure save a ton of money in vet bills if you are comfortable doing the job yourself, I know I have with good results............thats the great thing about the internet, now days there is no reason to use the " I don't know how" excuse anymore, with enough reading and referencing you can figure out the right way to do just about anything these days online.

Yea justin I'm with you I just used to leave the little skin cuts open and let them heal on their own and just do the hydrotherapy and vetericyn but it took forever for them to heal up. Now as soon as I get home (or if it's real late depending on the severity I'll wait until the morning ) I'll flush them out with some water spray a shot if cut and heal on it let that dry spray the wound with the vetericyn gel and stitch or staple it back together. Then I cover the wound with preparation H( yes the butt cream) an old vet taught me this method it helps to draw the skin back together and helps keep it closed.

I usally try and go with a more experienced hunter and let him "lead the way"....my catch dog got a few staples and let someone else do it but I was right there "learning" and asking questions..
