Ive had two dc 30's for 5 yrs. Not a problem one! Have 3 dc40's and the oldest one is 3 yrs and ive had to send 2 of the 40 s in for repair and like previously said I have also noticed the 40's seem to drop signal alot more often whether im using my astro 220 or my 320 makes no difference.

I would have to say the 30 hands down as well. back when I first bought an astro 220 and dc30's it seemed like they never broke or messed up and to be 100% honest I hunted way more often back then (4 to sometimes 6 days a week if I could afford it lol) and the dogs we hunted back then were longer range on average than what we hunt with now. The 40's i've owned haven't held a candle to the 30's,  the ONLY thing I think is better about the 40 than the 30 is the charger. Maybe i've had bad luck but I have had at least a 1/2 dozen 40's break on me and currently have 3 broke at the house right now that i've been procrastinating about sending in lol.

Justin I was just gonna ask u that dc 40 I sent in was out of warranty by a yr but when I told garmin it wouldnt power on they replaced it and paid for shipping no questions asked.(have you had the same problem and result?) That was awesome to me considering I have had to pay 150 for my 220's like 3 times. Im heck on the handhelds! Lol overall garmin is great is why I will stay with them. I considered switchn to sporttek when they come out with the 2.0 but I dnt think anyone will compare to garmins customer service

Thats interesting and good to know, I haven't sent mine in yet but I need too, just bein lazy I suppose lol. 2 of mine did what yours did and just completely quit working altogether and the third will power on but does not connect to the hand held no matter what I've tried. I just may have to give garmin a call and see what they say, free replacement would be nice but regardless I need to get em fixed sooner or later. Thanks for the info.

I recently started using the 30's with my 320. You can buy them cheap on ebay for $150 with charger.

I have 4 of the 30's and 3 of the 40's.  I hate the charging cord/docking setup on the 30's, much prefer the 40's charging style.
Don't notice a big difference in range, all are equipped with the aftermarket antennas.  But my 30's are a lot older than the 40's and have worked well for me.  I just had a 40 crap out on me this past week and I can't get it to power up, so looks like it will be going in for repair.  Garmin website says $89 for repairs.
I am considering upgrading to the 50's in the near future?

I heard garmin will upgrade you to a 50 for I think they said $100.

Well that's a deal if they'll upgrade to a dc50 for an additional $20.  Thanks, I'll ask them when I call.

yes I believe it was just because of the not powering up issue. Or maybe all the $ ive spent getting my 220 replaced  ;) anyways I just emailed them and simply told them it would not come on at all. No questions asked they sent me a prepaid postage label and as soon as they received it they mailed me a replacement which is what they always do anyway. It was abt a week from when I sent it in til I had my replacement n hand. And I do agree with everyone on the charging port on the 30's but to me that is its only downfall. They work just as good if not better than my 40's.

Just got off the phone with Garmin and that was a good laugh, and who doesn't need a good laugh during the day?
I explained to her that my DC 40 would not turn on, even when plugged into the power cord.  I told her I had even tried to disconnect the battery to reset it, but she informed me that trick does not work with the 40's, only the 30's.  She stated it would need to be sent in for repair.  I said, 'ok, that's like $89 right?" and she told me "no, it's $120."  I told her it says on their website $89 and she told me they do not list any prices on their website, I must have gotten that price from someone elses website.  I didn't want to argue with her, since I wasn't looking at the website, so I let it go.  I was about to agree to pay the $120 when I remembered what 'hillbilly' had told me about them upgrading to the DC50 for $100, so I asked her about upgrading.  Sure enough, for $100 you can upgrade to the DC50 which comes with a 1 year warranty.  For the $120 repair work, that only comes with a 90 day warranty.   :o
I told her, 'Lady, next time you have this conversation with a hunter, you should lead off with the upgrade deal and save all the talking about the repair work!"   ;D
So needless to say, I agreed to the upgrade to the DC50.  It sounded to me like they were trying to get all the 40s off the market since they won't do the upgrade for a DC30?
Oh, then after I get off the phone with her, I google 'garmin dc 40 repair' and a link pops up taking you to the Garmin website.  You type in the model of your device, in this case I typed DC40, and it states, $89 for repair.  Go figure!
Thanks hillbilly for the tip.   ;)

Maybe I just hit it at the right time then. Idk I also had to enter my collar id into garmins website. They said it was eligible for repair then sent me an email with a prepaid postage stamp. Slapped it n a box with the printed out label and had a refurbed one back at my house within a week. They didnt even ask one question. I was expecting to have to pay the 89bucks like u said because warranty had been over on it. Go figure bout time luck was on my side. Lol  ;)

We use both 30's and a 40 with our 220. The 30's have always been super reliable, no issues ever, and so far, my 40 has been flawless as well. So I've had good experience with both.
