Title: Protection training Post by: dodgegirl on May 28, 2014, 05:48:44 pm I know this is a hog dog site, but does anyone do protection training?
Title: Re: Protection training Post by: dub on May 28, 2014, 10:06:55 pm What kind of protection training. If you want a dog to protect you get a puppy. You feed that dog and water that dog and nobody else. Hold the puppy like a baby a few times. A good protection dog will not like it. So only do it for a few seconds and place the puppy back on it's feet. The dog learns that you will not hurt the dog even if it is not comfortable. Touch the puppy while it eats but never take the food. You make sure that dog does not get hurt at all for the first year. After that you will have a dog that will die for you. But be careful because some dogs may be too protective. Add some basic obedience training. That is the short version.

I do protection training, with some of our dogs. Was curious to see if anyone else does it. It's really awesome and fun. Title: Re: Protection training Post by: msula87 on May 29, 2014, 04:01:31 pm I dabble in the sport of Schutzhund with my Dobermann, but some of the folks I train with judge on the national level. Protection is one of the sport's three areas of focus along with tracking and obedience. I know I've seen some other guys talk about protection work on here, and even seem some pictures of shepherds/malinois trained in protection used on hogs. Makes sense as most working dogs have high prey drive. Search the forum and you'll find some good stuff.

I get the decoy but what's with the two tie outs? is that a bungee cord on the bottom and if so, what's it teach? Sorry, not trying to sound like a smart ass, just don't understand what its teaching.

The bungee is just for safety purpose if the trainer in not in his full suit. This particular dog just started & that was us just seeing how much interest he had. This drill will eventually teach him to bite only on command, I'm also pretty new at this so I do not have all of the answers.
