Lots of good pics in this post and many scattered throughout the entire board... http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=8529.0

I would personally never chain or cable my dogs, not worth the risk to me. ;)

I have my dogs in 12 x 12 kennels.  If I had some big shade trees, my dogs would be on 10-20' chains.

If they are on a 20' chain, the dog has 1256 sq ft

10' chain = 314 sq ft

12x12 kennel = 144 sq ft

The 20' chains give the dogs plenty of room to exercise, and the waste in not in such a confined area, as in a kennel.

I guess one can argue benefits on both side though. The kennels are good for keeping bitches in heat from being bred and no digging with a concrete or wood floor.

Chris, I like that math and that is why I prefer chains and ariel (sp) cable runs vs kennels for daily use...I am fortunate to have plenty of shade trees for my dogs all day. I do have a few kennels for pups and gyps in heat.

My kennel setup is a row of 4 x 8 kennels on concrete with a metal roof. There are ten kennels in the row and the top is about 8 feet tall. I let my dogs run every day in the half acre dog yard surounding the kennel ( 2 x 4 horse fence to keep them in). I hunt them or work cattle with the cowdogs every chance I get which is 2-4 times a week. I think they stay in pretty good shape doing this!

i use kennels 6ft by 20ft.  all chain-link 6ft tall.  half concrete half dirt.  tin over the concrete, over the dirt left uncovered.  all houses are raised about 2 ft.

i prefer chains. i have a couple of kennels. i handle my dogs on the chain much more.kenneled dogs get a pat on the head at feeding time.i use a chain and flat roof dog houses so they can jump on top if they want.
