Title: yard dog Post by: rebel ridge kennels on June 30, 2014, 05:36:54 pm In need of a new yard dog my old heeler recently passed on. I live in the mountains of eastern ky and need something to keep critters away from the house. Not many hogs here but bear,bobcat, and coyote are very plentiful. I am thinking a bmc or maybe a cat, a dog that will put a poltician or salesman down the road is a plus as well. Opinions anyone
Title: Re: yard dog Post by: Nannyslayer on June 30, 2014, 11:15:04 pm I've always like catahoulas. I was raised around one and at the ripe ole age of 4 I was able to play outside by myself. That dog wouldn't leave my side, and wouldn't let a critter or person in the yard with me.
But, many different breeds can be good yard hounds. Had a boxer once that was a great yard dog. Barked at everything and kept the possums off the porch. Also had a 1/2 Australian Shepard 1/2 collie. He was a smart dude. He bred my registered MTN CUR on accident and spit out a clone, but has a natural bob tail. A good buddy ended up with him and doesn't have much of a need for him. I wish you were closer because I would sure let you try him out. Laid back as all get out with familiar faces and kids, but will not tolerate intruders...

Her Mom meets me half way, but I could have probably worked something out if I would've known. I'm sure you will find you one though.

A good bred American bulldog or a cur dog would be ideal for this feller and way more affordable I would think Title: Re: yard dog Post by: Hutch33 on July 02, 2014, 11:16:05 am We had a collie mix, she was the best yard dog there ever was. She would ran off all critters showing no fear, and always alerted us when someone was on the yard. She never snapped at anyone, just threatened until we gave the "ok" and it was back to laying on the front porch.
