Title: Big bulldogs
Post by: shuttin em down on July 25, 2014, 08:54:04 pm
I recently got my cd killed and I got a big bulldog about 60-70 pound range what are the ups and downs about big bulldogs I know speed will be a factor but we got a small cd (23 pounds) for speed and he runs all day on a lead back and forth he seems to have good stamina and if y'all can post pics of yall a big bulldogs (pits) thank y'all for y'all's input

I like mine big but athletic.   The real thick, muscular, big headed dogs never really work for me.   If he weighs about 65lbs and can jump in back of a pick-up with the tailgate closed I'll try them kind all day long.  LOL

I would rather have two around 40 to 50 lb than a big monster had a few didn't work that good for me. But on the flip side they sure can hold good hog in place lol my buddy has a 110 lb pit he got from Kentucky few yrs back he is good I just like the smaller type

I like mine big and slow. Not un-athletic just slower going to a bay. Doesn't bother me one bit if they trot to a bay. I like it better because I run real loose dogs and usually only one or two on the ground that will run a 10ft circle around one and bark. I'm a firm believer that if your catch dogs go in slow and pick their rout rather than crashing through the brush and slam one then your less likely to bust a bay wen the catch dogs get sent. I like it wen they slip in there, pick a rout, and nab an ear. Wen my bulldogs catch they are on their own till I get there cus my cur dogs don't help catch and I don't want them to. Don't want them to be lazy, just accurate

Mine does a trot not a slow trot but he trots the hogs where I'm at rather run than fight anyday of the week my bay dogs will catch 100 pounds and under any bigger than that they'll back up 6-7 foot

I like big bulldogs. We hunt in the marsh a lot and I want a dog that will anchor a hog. This is ketch my current catch dog. He is around 80#.

(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/26/ra7a4ahu.jpg)I have a firm belief that speed kills, here is mine "kreig" he weighs about 60-65#. He's fast as lighting though, very athletic. On regular occasions he runs hogs down in the open ground who have a couple hundred yards head start and has the stamina to go with the cur dogs for miles if the hog breaks before he gets there. Of course he's mine, but if I'm lookin for a CD I'd prefer them to be built just like him. Little bit of leg and stamina for days. Lots of times we only use him and I like to know he's got the wind to be cut loose time after time and not be sucking wind after the first 100yds.jmo

Every size catch dog is a individual! What he can do size wise differs from dog to dog. Example, I had a 95lb pitbull Mako. You would think a dog that big would not be agile, athletic, or have any endurance! You could take him on a retractable leash and go for a 10mi bike ride and he would be at your side the whole time!

That being said, I like mine about the size of my curs. Males 60-70lbs and hard as nails, and females 45-55lbs.

Cajun. Nice built bulldog, love that alert look!

This is Baus at about 75lbs when in hunting weight. He's 7. He's a straight in kinda dog and not quick to let go. ;D

This is PJ. About 80lbs hunting weight. She is smart about going into a bay. If the bay stops she stops and listens. I like being about to call her back if it breaks instead of having a bulldog out a mile or more.

Oh, and we use one smaller CD named Jane. 45lbs pit that's all ear. She is super fast to a bay. PJ normally comes in after to anchor. So normally one smaller and one bigger CD for us.

I like the way you hunt. ..dogs that sit back and bay till you get there with catch dog...there has been several times where there are two and THREE bays at once...one catch dog that is solid can get it done. Last few times ive hunted like that NO dogs got hurt, we got more hogs than hours we hunted....good times!!

That "old" gyp that Jody posted is one of those ease in to the bay without crashin brush catchdogs that is sure as you can get and don't get cut much. Her son in the pic above is 13 mo. and will get tried this winter when I come down. He is standin at 75#. Sure hope he carries on like his parents.

The red bulldog is REd, a 70# pit who was my best. If a hog broke he normally ran it down within 200 yards & it was caught.
The dk. brindle pit with the vest was Billy, a 65# pit who looked like the devil himself, but literally would lick a stranger to death. This was around 1980 & some of the first vests we were making. It was made out of a heavy canvas, but it was bulky.
Hammer a 85# pit who I got from Orval Roberts. This is how he always met me at feeding time. Whoever said pits do not have personality has just never been around them.

Cajun b4 I even read ur post the first thing I noticed was the brindle bulldog holding food bowl in his mouth. Although I am a sucker for brindle dogs I have a big brown and white pit that does exactly the same thing with the food bowl! Its a trip. Lol

I have seen good bulldog catch dogs that weigh as much as 85 pounds. After that, they loose their heat tolerance, stamina, and ambition. Although I am certain there are exceptions out there. If a dog can't jump onto the back of a pickup truck, consider that 2.5 strkes against him in my book.

I have a male that is 100 lbs in hunting shape. Been a great dog thus far. He doesnt run into a bay full speed, kind of a trot. He is smart and has a good handle.

reatj81's old female blows my mind. I send my lab to a bird, he sends his bulldog to a bay. Very nice female.
