I hear mixed things about this have some buddies that coyote hunt and swear by it. Tried to get my vet to get me some he didnt like it said it was hard on kidneys. I thought about using it for faster recovery after hard hunts. Whats yall take on it??

Ed...I don't know anything about Dex...but cut heal 2 times a day and a 500 mg ampicillin capsule 1 time a day works pretty good...

Ed I've given it several times on a large dog, I've given up to two cc's but usually just one or less. The only time I've ever given it was with a snake bite. It's really good for swelling, and along with penicillin I've been lucky. I also carry Benadryl with me and give half of one when I notice swelling but don't give dex that day or, night only the next day if the swellings bad.

Ive used it for along time,give for lot things that are swollen,snake bites works good.you dont wont to over do it,i give one cc for couple days problem normally is gone.good stuff always in my bag on a hunt.

Dex is a cortisteroid. It will reduce inflamation and counteract allergic reactions. Like any cortisone or steroid, it's not good to over do it. I would only use it for injury and poison bites. That way there is little chance of side effects. I used it on race horses pre race 24 hours out for several years with no ill effects but that was usually only once a month or so and only 5cc's for a big horse. If I had a dog come up sore after a hard hunt, I gave them an asprin a day for two or three days and it worked good.
      I had to take dex during chemo to help counter the effects of the chemo drugs. Nowhere could I find that it would affect your kidneys. I know if you take alot of it, you have to tapper off of it slowly or it can cause side effects from withdrawle.
 

It should only be used for emergency in dogs. We use it a lot on horses and cattle but it is harder on a dogs kidneys than other animals. And it causes deformities in puppies if given to a pregnant female ( I know from experience)

Be careful with it I killed and a dang good baydog with it one time it's hard on their kidneys I always give it sub que iys awesome if you have a dog that has been snake but run over or any other trauma that cause swelling if given pretty soon it will nip the swelling I the bud and the dog will recover so much faster, I keep a bottle of that and banamine on hand at all times

Some guys use it with no short term problems, but long term problems I don't know. I know they use it to make a dog that ran 20 plus miles the day before feel like they're brand new.

May not be best thing to do, but that's what I've seen. I would think it would be nice come tournament time, but I've never used is personally, just going off what close friends say.

i just recently asked my vet about it, and he told me " said it is just like anything else you have to give up something to get something" in other words yea it will give a wore out dog some pep but it cuts down on the immune system at the same time, if a dog is cut down bad alot of times their liver and kidneys try to shut down and they definetly dont need dex in their system when this is going on, i know earleir this summer i had one cut down real bad vet gave him a 20% chance to live because he had been through so much his kidneys were trying to shutdown he told me dex would have prob went on and killed him if i had give him a shot the day before or had in his system, and i had rather have a wore out dog that can get a day or two rest than one that if it gets cutdown bad is going to die because i gave it a shot to make hunt a few more hours without giving out. i am definetly no vet just repeating what i was told

I've been giving dex for years.  Works wonders on swelling.  What I have learned is give orally bout half a cc in the mouth.  A vet told me this.

I use dex for about everything. If you go to my vet with your hog dog they give it dex. I don't think I have ever took one and they didn't give it dex. They gave me two bottles and told me just to do it. I had one dog that stove up bad after hunts and I would give it to him if I was hunting the next day. I have had some old old dogs that I would give it to the night before. It works miracles for me

IT IS A MUST HAVE IN YOUR MED BOX.  GREAT for swelling, shock, ect.  I use it all the time.  Got a YARD full of 10-14 yr old dog.  Dog gets beat up, give him 2ccs dex, antibiotics, and B12 hell most likly be ready to go in the morning if it not nothing life threatening.  Seriously, swollen ankles and anything else, if you keep the swelling down it helps recovery time drastically.
