Title: Hunting a dog with a open wound?
Post by: Justified on October 13, 2014, 07:18:45 pm
He got cut a few weeks ago and still has a3 3inch gash on the point of his shoulder where it meets the base of his neck. just isn't healing fast enough because the skin is loose and he pulls suture with every move. So mosin hoping for it to heal inside out. He is itching to go but I'm looking for something I can put over the wound while I hunt. I've heard Vaseline but I'm hesitant. He's driving me crazy and needs to go. Any suggestions?

a 3 inch cut will about close itself without stitches if you give a 500 mg capsule of antibiotics for about 10 days and cutheal sprayed on cut twice a day until about healed...most will be healed after 2 weeks and the bad cuts in about three weeks...hunting the dog with a cut has to do with location of cut and what was cut as well and how far along the dog is in healing...more than likely the dog shouldn't be hunted...

If my dogs are cut other than minor cuts they  don't go till there 100 %

He just finished 10days of cephilexin a week ago. I have been putting purple lotion on it. All muscle has healed. it was originally about 10 inches of skin filleted from the muscle that has mostly healed but where his loose skin at the point of his shoulder isn't healing.   Edged of skin have healed over which makes me worry it's going to try and stay open without muscle to fill it in. he's going crazy in the kennel and rolling/laying on it without thinking so I was hoping I could lead him in with a plate on and give him his fix to settle him down. It's been 3weeks +

Cut n heal wound spray is good stuff.  I always let them heal from the inside out.

If he wants to go then send him, if it's not life threatening or hindering his ability to move then I don't see where it is hurting him

He's probably far enough along in the healing process that he would be ok, but for future reference, a dog that is cut uses a lot of energy fighting infection and more likely to suffer other complications. I learned the hard way with a catch dog I was hunting that I thought was fine to walk in and catch. He had a big cut on his chest but it didn't seem to bother him so I took him hunting. He wasn't caught for longer more than a minute and I had to cool him down and tote him back to the truck. I take some military guys hunting from time to time and one is vet. He said the reason he almost stroked out was because his body was fighting infection and couldn't handle the added heat and stress.

As for me personally, if he can lick it, I'd quit putting anything on it and let him heal it, of course you said its near the neck so I don't know if he can lick it?

Also a good thing to remember....if/when a dog is on antibiotics, they will run hot. Good to keep in mind.
