Title: Leptospirosis
Post by: Mike on October 22, 2014, 12:27:44 pm
Any of y'all ever dealt with it? I had one of my gyps come down with it, not sure what all the vet prescribed yet... momma took her in. ;D

It is contagious to other dogs via urine.
I'd keep an eye on the rest of your pack over the next few days. Wash your hands well after handling her as well while she's being treated. If you caught it early, she should pull through fine without major liver damage.

Hope she heals up well for you. Sounds like your neck of the woods is a prime environment for it. Found the info below online.

Thanks for the links fellas, good info in there.

Vet says she'll be fine, 15 days of cephalexin capsules. She did say to make sure and give your grown dogs a 7 way shot once a year as it has the lepto vaccine in it.

We had a running hound come down with it back in the 80's. Unfortunately we caught it too late and the dog had the shakes terrible after he was treated. This was before we had a tracking system and would leave a coat or dog box where we turned them loose and come back and check for em the next day. He went missing for 3 weeks, and he was finally found, he was in tough shape.

Did he say after you get her healed up would 7n1 shots help keep her from getting it again? And how did you know something was wrong with her what symptoms did she have?

Yes, the 7 way once a year will prevent it. Not eating, no energy, fever, dropping weight were the symptoms.
