Title: dog laying out
Post by: johnf on September 20, 2009, 08:15:02 pm
i have a 20 mon. old plott male. was starting real well but last 2 hunts he has not came back. 1st. time i was able to drive around and walk in to get him.saturday he layed out in the mountains an took a yr. old pup with him and their still out. i can track them across a lake but no way to get to them. if they come out or i figure out a way to get to them i wander what i can do to real him back in. or do they generaly keep staying out.

if he is doing this at this age he prob wont stop and a shock collar will most likely mess him up.............there are many varibles you need to consider before doing something major with the dog, first would be just to get him back and make sure nothing is wrong with him
may not be "laying" up at all, he is a hound and he may just have that much bottom and not giveing up, if thats the case then dont try to change him at all

the dogs have moved inland some today think they have started back out. had a good signal at one time but it faded guess they topped a moutain.there still together.the dogs left on hogs but we were unable to make it to where  they went .had signal bounces and lots of big hills dont know if they ever stopped it or not. LAYING OUT may not be the right term. the time before i was close to him in the woods they had lost the hog. he was what i call milling around kinda cold trailing and i couldnt call him off. bitch dog picked up track bayed hog and got a significant cut. he ended comming out way off from where we turned out.

I say if a dog can't come back to where you put them out at least by the next day then you don't need them. You spend more time hunting dogs than you do hogs or whatever you may be hunting. JMO
