Title: Blue lacy starting to open up
Post by: Jared H. on September 20, 2009, 09:14:19 pm
Iv'e got a 5yr old blue lacy that is turning into a decent strike dog. The guy that had him before me didn't hunt him that much but every time he's got on a pig he gets better and better.  Me and my buddy went on a streak for about 6 weeks of gettin on hogs everytime.  The past few times we've either had runners or nothing at all.  Since our dry spell my dog has started openin up on fresh signs.   Saturday he ran past me following a track wide open.  What makes a dog start doing this?  Is there anyway to break em of it.  Really I don't care if he's open or not as long as we keep gettin pigs but I'm just asking.  Thanks.

If you figure it out I'd like to know the trick!

Also none of the other dogs in the pack are open so he's not learning it from them.

That is pretty interesting. Excitement is all that I can think of. Unless, are you sure that it does not have hound in it?

You say open, you mean open on track, barking the whole way, correct? Not just yippy and not babbling?

My best dogs (all Lacy) get really excited and yippy on hot track, like you would expect an excited little terrier to do, but never wide open and never more than about 50 yards from the pig and closing in fast. Those same dogs may yip every couple of strides if a pig breaks and they are in hot pursuit or can see it, but none of them will bark unless the pig is standing looking at them.

I have seen one Lacy Dog who was pretty much full open but he was a product of his environment, being run with open dogs his whole life.

Dont try to break it.  Just go with the flow.  You can mess a good dog up trying to break it from barking.

Thanks for yall's input,  I need the help.  He's a full blood lacey.  At first he would get yippy around fresh sign and most of the time he would find a pig.  This last time he was running like he saw something and me and my buddy thought for sure he was on a pig because he was flat out barking.  But he never came across any thing and he went on his way looking for more sign.  He's come along way since I started hunting him and he's still got room for improvement.  Maybe once I can put a pig in front of him again he will ease off.

Took ole Blue out again and this time he did better on the fresher sign.  Got a little yippy but didn't really open up.  Still didn't get a pig down and this time when we got back to the truck he decided he would chase a herd of cows.  This is gettin out of hand.  I don't know why he is starting act up on me.  He wouldn't even bark at a cow before I put all this work into him.  Need some advice.....
