Title: javelina pigs
Post by: capt295 on December 25, 2014, 09:17:12 pm
Can any of you south Texas hog hunters tell me if hunting javelina pigs with dogs is any different than feral hogs. A Friend of mine wants me to take my dogs to his friends land to hunt javelinas for the owner. He said these pigs have attacked and wounded 3 of the land owners dogs. I will definitely have my dogs with vest and collars, but I only have 2 dogs. Any input would be appreciated.

If you are going to hunt them in Texas you better check the legality of hunting them with dogs, they are a game animal. I have had dogs killed by javelin. If one of your dogs catches one then the rest of the herd will surround them and rip their guts out. They are definitely more dangerous than feral pigs.

Thanks for the advice, I heard they stayed in packs and would come to the aid of a wounded pig. I don't want my dogs outnumbered. So I guess we will hunt them with guns.

Never hunted them but from what I've read. U don't want ur dogs on them. Kinda like punching a hornet nest with a stick at noon while tied to the tree.

Yeah as others have said, I've heard they team up. 1 on 1 they're not as tough as a hog, but they join forces and come to eachother's aide, which is a big difference. Imagine if pigs did that? It's a good thing they only give a damn about themselves, lol. A holding dog especially seems a bad match for javelina, very very quick and agile bay dogs might be ok.

They're like 50lb rats, and once one starts squealing others will show and team up together.  They hate dogs and the big difference is they don't cut like hogs do, they bite.

One does not simply catch a javelina.... They will destroy your dogs!  Only caught one in my life and I hope I never catch one again!!!!!

I've caught quite a few when I was out west working not on purpose just happened. They are some mean daddy didn't marry mommys forsure. We never had a group come back to fight if one was caught witch is prolly a good thing just one of them suckers would do some damage to a pack of dogs. The flexibility they have is crazy along with those teeth equals bad deal. It was one hellava Rush though lol

You might be thinking of capybaras. Javelina are new world pigs, a different family to sus scrofa (eurasian boar/hogs/pigs whatever) but they're all pigs/suids, and not rodents.

Warthogs are another pig you would think is very dangerous for dogs, but actually they're just really really fast and can only really be hunted with sighthounds. Other than that they're actually easier than hogs.
