Just picked up a few more hens. Barred rocks and one rir..(Rhode island red) just wandering if anybody else kept chickens around for eggs or meat. We are slowly trying to eliminate the ole grocery store..lol..

Ya I keep them yard birds those rir and production reds are pretty good birds I use to have some light Branahms they where big hens make a good Sunday meal. But those americanas are good layers and you ain't got to die the for Easter lol

   just some ol game fowl for me . the eggs aren't grade a large but they eat pretty good and when mature them pullets are just right for frying   lol . 

Lol. I hear that that judge. I been doing some research trying to find a good "dual-purpose" hen. And these barred rocks are what i come up with. There pretty big and lay eggs pretty consistently. Plus there pretty to look at..lol..we plan to build a bigger hog pen and raise 2 or 3 hogs, have a decent flock of chickens (20 or so) , and raise a big garden year round. We already have a few cows. We live right on the river and its loaded with channel cats. Thats plenty of food. Not to mention deer,squirrel,rabbits and the wild hogs. I aint one of these crazy organic or nothing people but were going to try to get as much as we can on our own this year and see how it goes. You still might see me with 2 mcdoubles no mustard and a large sweet tea though! Haha..

Halfbreed do they not tase gamey?? ;D haha. Had a guy yesterday telling me he eats his. I am the type id eat about anything long as its not to crazy. I aint eating a possum or nothing like that. I wo i ld eat a coon. And rattlesnake is real good!

I have a few. Barred rocks and silver laced wyandottes. They're producing plenty of eggs for us. We had Rhode island reds but dang were they dumb. They all culled themselves by running into the dogs kennels and spots.

Georgia, whats wrong with possum? Ok, yea its a lil greasy but fried up its not to bad n then u got extra frying greasy. Good thing u dont live in a heavily korean populated area, u could get kagogi on a stick or stir fried with noodles.

I did watch it. I watch them skew it up n serve it to me n even watched the stir fry it. I dont know though which is the best, grilled or stired. Both methods have their pros, but a single con and is extremely tastey. Most frown on cooking rover, but its as tasety as fresh deer or pork or fish or what ever they like

That would have to be one of those life or death meals for me. If it came right down to it i would eat the neighbor...hahah..

the oldtimers around here said whistlepig ( groundhog ) was real good meat . their oldtimers said painter ( panther ) was a delicacy .

  possums were caught alive and fed cornbread and garden scraps before butchering , as they have been seen crawling out of the belly of a dead cow .  ;)

My dad said the same thing about cows and possums. No thank ya ! Like i said...only if i had to.

Hogs r scavengers just like a buzzard or possum. So how much wild hog meat yaw eat?

Ive eat a ton of it. I still would argue the fact that there no where near as bad as a possum or buzzard...lol..yall be quiet now i like hog meat!!

How well do u like chicken? They will eat their own poo, so again, u trade 1 "nasty" animal for a common eaten poo eating nasty animal.

dillo tastes as good as fresh cooked chicken...possum I can't stand to skin one out much less eat one...

I like those dillos in the spring when they first come out the hole . Fry'um up like chicken , yummy !!

I keep about thirty hens and hatch out chicks about twice a year to replace older hens . I have developed  my own breed , I crossed production reds with a half game roster and for some reason wound up good laying hens that weigh around ten pounds. Now I am crossing this with a Cornish x New Hampshire red rooster , that I breed an raised. I have twelve pullets out of this cross that look real good . Will see in the spring !!

Got a yard full. Always heard my granddaddy say a chicken was the only animal on earth that would fight his daddy, screw his momma, and eat $#^t bet yet we eating it more than anything else!

I have Silver Penciled Rocks and my wife has her own which are Buff Orphingtons from show stock.   Her buffs are to big for my liking.    They roost and nest of the coop floor ss because they are to big to get up on the roost.     Birds that big are not very hardy i wouldn't think.     I like my silver rocks.   They too meet the S.O.P.  criteria and are bigger than most birds but can still roost and nest in the nest boxes.         We generally have 12 hens in all and 2 roosters.    We plan for spring and hatch out around 50 chicks in preperation for all the grasshoppers.    Broody hens are allowed to brood and raise chicks too in addition to the 50 we normally put in the encubator for spring and summer grasshoppers.    We process all the young birds when they get big enough/old enough.   Might keep the best hen or roo out of the bunch and process a bird o deem less desirable than the young bird.         We don't show chickens but like to have S.O.P. birds running around in the yard.
   I let my hog dogs run around loose sometimes and they don't bother the chickens.     Now and then a few hens will get in the dog pens and forge around.   Dogs pay them no mind thankfully!

I tried a many different ones back when I had em my favorites were the red Starr

   now see that's where you are going wrong Rueben , you don't skin a possum you just gut it and singe the hair off of them over a fire and then cook um up   lmao !!!!!!
