Title: Troubles with training Post by: ChanceandAnita on March 09, 2015, 01:25:46 pm I haven't talked much bout my pups till yesterday I didn't really know if any of them was gonna make it as hunting dogs. This group of pups are so different from my last group the weird thing they are all out of the same mom and dad. So here is my story
I bred my old Yella dog and my straight catch cur Diesel , I was so excited cause it had been 1 1/2 years since my old dog had cycled and I was starting to think she was done having puppies. So right off the bat I knew I wasn't selling any out of this litter and prayed she would throw me a nice female to replace my old one. Pups hit the ground on September 28,2015 she had eight but lost one before I got home to help. Four females and three males grew into some fine looking pups. 2months (http://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t532/ChanceandAnita/1850A938-4BCF-497F-9AA0-016B86DC9148-3662-0000048D755F3506_zps20973a3d.jpg) Jus as soon as they could walk and follow me it was to the pig pen to feed, everyday. By this time I had only one female that was barking at the pig. All other pups would smell but not bark. At four months they was working the pig like a cow dog but still no bark. By now I'm worried cause my other litter was total opposite. I'm very confused as to why these pups will not bark even when I put an older dog with them. I keep working with the pups and started mock hunting. Pups find the pig but still no bark. By now I'm thinking that I might have to cull some dogs and very frustrated. So yesterday I decided to take to pups with me hunting, they are only five months old. Really young for what I'm asking but I was not getting anything else from them at home. Jus as soon as they hit the ground they was off keeping up with my older dogs ranging 100 to 300 jus searching. I hear tank bark then spot and Clyde and there running.. Pups stopped at 300 yards My older ones ran it 780 yards but did not get it stopped. So we wait for them to return gather up and start again. At this point I'm pretty please they are ranging and finding tracks trails and poop from pigs lol. Tank, spot , Clyde and my pups Groot and Creep wind again and run out around four hundred yards and then I heard it , my pups opened up with my older dogs and we had a bay going on . We head in can hear them working hard holding. We can see its multiple pigs 2 bigger sows and 2 smaller pigs. At this point my catch dog got to excited opened up and the pigs turned toward us and busted. The prettiest sight I have ever seen was those pups barking running them pigs lol.... And to think I was really thinking bout culling some dogs ....... We caught only one pig but it was a hunt I won't forget them two pups proved themselves and earned a pen on my yard. Now it's time to see how the girls do. Just remember they are pups and will progress in their own way. Compare each pup to the day before not the pup before.

That right there is good advice Shotgun, that comparing at a young age will get you with your dogs and your kids if you aren't careful. Unfortunately through the years, I am sure I have done that very thing and probably culled some decent prospects too soon. Glad I didn't make that mistake with my kids !! On the other hand it's all right to have certain expectations at certain times also. Good luck with those pups, sounds like you have what you were trying for.
