Title: Pups in training
Post by: Cristina on September 30, 2009, 03:54:53 pm
We have three pups were working with. Sabina, Junior and Sancho who are about to be 6mo. old. We had given Sancho to my brother in law because he just recently lost his dog Smokey so we wanted to chear him up and give him a new hunting dog. We started Sabina and Junior last week with our new puppy trainer Cutie Pie  :D. Cutie was a birthday present I got for my neice who absolutely loves dogs (she of course gave him the name). Apparently Cutie tore up my sisters yard and was too hyper for the small yard they have so she brought him to my dads and hes been staying since. Hes an eight month old Labrador Mix, but no dog stays in our yard without being tried in the pen  ;D. We threw him in there and well, he found his hatred for hogs  ;D So we've been using him to train our other pups. Here are some pics of them working. This was Sanchos first time seeing a hog and Sabina's second time. We decided to not put Junior in today to not work up the hogs too much.

With some more work and patience they will be on their way!!!
Has anyone ever hunted with Labradors??
I know they are an eager to please breed, but I wanted to see if anyone has ever hunted with them before.

There is a family that has a hog removal business that use labs exclusivly. I found their website when I was looking for hogdog sites. They use about four dogs at a time, and the labs do it all. Strike, bay and catch. If I can find it I will post it.

Looks like you are doing a good job starting the pups! My #1 strike dog is 1/2 lab 1/2 BMC.

I've got a Lab/Pointer and my brother in law has his brother and they are only 9 months old and are amazing at tracking and with time and more experience I think they should be able to be on their own hogs with no problem! They can track them no problem but once they hit you'll hear the 2-3 short barks and the hog breaking! I also have a Shepherd/Lab that is my main tracking dog but she is getting ripe in age and will be benched once the pups are ready.

Yeah he's pretty catchy, were going to start taking him out in the woods and see what he does, he's pretty hyper and active and listens also when he wants to catch I tell him to ease up and he backs off a bit. My father had a chocolate lab some 25+ years back. As a matter of fact my grandpa from my mothers side was just asking him today “what ever happened to that chocolate lab you had that could catch fish?” Lol my dad says he could sick that dog on anything and he would catch it. Someone stole the dog from him. He still gets choked up talking about it lol. Thanks for sharing your experiences hog hunting with labs.
I'm going to work these pups in the pen again and then start staging hunts.
