Dog of mine has a cut under his front leg in what id call his armpit. Probably 3 inches long but you can see inside the pocket of loose skin. No muscles are cut and it's not cut into his chest and vitals. He pulled the staples out of himself. What should i try now? Yes I understand a wound has to heal from the inside out but if there's just a pocket of loose skin could I staple and go over with super glue? If I can't get it improving within the next few days I'll take him to the vet

Keep it washed out and keep hitting the dog with pen. It will heal.

If the dog were mine I would put vetricyn gel on it 2 times a day and watch it heal in a week.I hardly ever staple or stitch dogs I use the vetricyn gel no drainage issues at all that stuff is amazing.

Thanks, I've been keeping it clean with peroxide I'll hi him with pen. And try that gel

Peroxide is fine for a one time cleanout but don't keep using it.

That happen to one of my dogs last year i gave her some penacilen and sprayed some blue spray for like two days then i just let her clean it herself. It healed up good she kept it clean by licking it all the time.

what has worked for me is 1 capsule on 500 mg of amoxillin once a day for a week and spray quick heal once or twice a day...with this treatment most of the time there is no need to stitch up or staple.

I don't stitch or staple none of my dogs unless there is body parts hanging off and I just use pin and vetricyn gel and never have one get infected or take along time to heal

I don't use injectable pen very often it is hard on the dogs. I use fishbotics and amox 95 % of the time. Any cut that is open I stitch or staple if I can do it then I take them in. If you had a good employe that was hurt would you just give them Motrin and move on or treat them as they matter just the way I look at it. My dogs are very important to me I don't have them just to beat my chest after they catch a pig. I like to think that they know the difference

 I care for my dogs as if they were my children the reason I try to avoid stitching is because I feel it takes longer to heal and tend to pocket infection I use antibiotics and vetricyn gel and in one week most cuts are almost completely healed if the cuts into muscle or arterial then I stitch. Pelt seems to hold pockets of fluid and take much longer to heal when stitched in my opinion.

Ya those cleaners are very good I don't get many infections due to closing up the cut but I clean them very good and put this anti cream in the cut after closed up it works very good. Not that I can do better than others but I do as much as I can. If the dog can get to it, 99% of the time he will pull stitches or staples out. If I staple , it's just 2 or 3 to pull it closed ,but leaving spaces to drain. I see little difference in time to heal between a vet sutured wound and keeping it clean and letting it granulate from inside out. My advice would be if you are gonna staple or sew it, u better put dog on good antibiotic retiming and keep him off the dirt til it's healed. I'll usually hose pipe rinse it good a couple times a day, and top it off with vet ricin or purple spray. If any sign of infection, on a reg size dog, a couple ml penicillin for 3 days then oral antibiotics for another 10 days to 2 weeks.

judge, why do you say injectable pen is hard on a dog?

Ok here goes pen is hard on liver and kidneys more so on dogs the occasional pen shot is fine but the every other use has its effect like any thing else. I have had very few infections on cuts on horses and dogs. I do what my vet has told me for over 20 plus yrs and I have had very few problem. The trick is cleaning and disinfection. Now this might not work for most of the folks on here but my dogs when cut not minor things are brought in side the house most are house trained and kennel broke. This aids in a speedy recovery. I am not dependent on any one dog to catch a hog so they get put up and treated fairly good till I think they are suitable to go out side. This is my way of doing things

10-4 I kind of figured that, just never heard it before. thanks.    I've always gave pen for 3 days after a cut or poke, along with cleaning. I should probably change it up some.

JudgePeel...I do not use injectable because it really hurts the dog...Painful...so I use the capsules and cutheal...I used to stitch or staple and I would have a larger scar going this route...cutheal is like magic...no scabbing, no infections just a great looking healing process taking place that is hard to beat...I agree with you on taking good care of the dogs...once the dog makes the team he is well taken care of at my place...

Cut heal is very good stuff I get the dollar store Neosporin and alternate first few days makes a big difference. I might go over board but it really makes a difference

Sounds just like a cut on my dog, same description, same spot and same size. He tore it open on barbed wire fence. I left it open, sprayed Vetricyn every day and he stayed in about 12 days until it was down to just a little scab in the center of where the the cut was. He could have probably gone outside in about a week, the open part was healed over but it hadn't closed up all the way

Where do y'all get the amoxicillin from?

I have friends that go to the Mexican border and I have them bring me 2 bottles of 100 capsules  of amoxicillin, 500 mg's each...so 200 capsules will last a good while...my family will come around and get a weeks worth when someone gets  ill...

you can get fish mox at the pet store, they are 250 mg caps so you use two per dose, two to three times a day for ten to 14 days. at least thats what I do

You can ask your vet for some antibiotics to keep on had most vets will give you some my vet will give most any thing you just have to ask and when you are a steady customer it helps lol

Go to revival animal health.com and look at their antibiotics, they got every and anything u could need, and if u have dosing questions, go to Merck veterinary manual online and it has all the dosing info for any and all antibiotics

I always just went off of what the vet prescribed when I used to go in for every minor infection, for a major infection it would be 3 doses per day and 14 days, its always worked for me, But I realize the broad spectrum antibiotics are not the best tool for every job. just recently I had a dog inhale a foxtail and got pneumonia, I knew it was serious from stories Ive heard, the vet prescribed clavamox which is better for lung infections
