Title: The 60's Club...
Post by: Reuben on October 02, 2015, 10:25:49 am
well how many on here are in their 60's? I made it on September 18th...

When I was a youngster I couldn't wait to grow up so I could be as smart as my Dad...it never happened...
Basically speaking I am the same person I was back then but have learned more about life and other things...Luckily we are all different otherwise this world would be in trouble...and mother nature can be harsh but it is a beautiful set up that only God could have create...in the same way he made us all different...

I remember one day my brother drove up in his 1966 Super Sport...He had it going on...lol...he had an 8 track player in his car and I saw a CCR "Creedance Clearwater Revival" tape in his car so I plugged it in...and it about floored me...it was...well, music to my ears...it was a sound I had never heard before...or since...

seems like it was just yesterday...time flies

CCR…Born on the Bayou
I can remember the fourth of July, Runnin' through the backwood bare. I can still hear my old hound dog barkin', Chasin' down a hoodoo there. Chasin' down a hoodoo there.

Yep...a 1966 galaxy 500 xl with a police interceptor under the hood gave me some wings when I was too young to know better...luckily I totalled it and no one was hurt...

I'm not 60.....

But I always tell folks I look forward to it! I don't want to rush life, but at 33 with 3 young kids-60 sounds so relaxing!

The good news I feel 21 still and hopefully at 60 I feel 30!

I made 60 the other day on the 1st. Always looked forward to that date as it was the opener for squirrel season. A friend I have hog hunted with off and on for over 30 years, we were talking about how fast time goes. Dosent seem that long ago & we were the young guns. Now we really appreciate the young guns with us. lol

I see a common theme now after Cajun mentioned he turned 60! All the old guys hunt them singing, long running hounds, and all the younger men are going with rougher dogs!! Lol!!
Thank god I am only 52 and fit as a 20yr stud, because I hate hearing hounds singing!!
Only joking, Happy Bday Cajun, still looking forward to trying one of those Rough Plotts everyone says you have!!

I make no claims about being in great shape or how much I can do but I am semi retired and when I do work as a millwright there is no one that outworks me. I just started hog hunting 9 yrs ago and hunt with guys that are 20 yrs younger than me and I take every step they do. I have always thought it important to pull my share of the load or more if I'm able. Sometimes I am flat beat down in the evening and sometimes I am groaning bigtime inside when I roll outta bed but the Lord has blessed me with good enuf health that I don't have to take any pills. I have hunted with an Ol feller that come over from Florida named Edgar who is about 80 right now and I hope I can go as hard as he does.

Thanks Guy. lol Actually I think I am breeding away from those super rough dogs. Losing 2 or 3 young dogs every year just has no appeal to me. I have hog hunted since I was a teenager, before tracking systems & boy have we had changes in hogs & the way we hunt. In the old days we had strictly feral hogs & open woods. Most hogs bayed up pretty quick altho, once in awhile we would get on a runner. In the early 70's we had a importation of Eurasion Boar introduced. By the 80's they were clear cutting every block of woods around. I remember when I got my 1st 3 wheeler, a Honda big Red 185 & thought that was the cat's meow. About the same time I got telemetry. Started running Plotts on bear & with my curs for the running hogs. Always had a good line of curs that could get the job done. Now a days, I don't care if I catch a hog or not but I do love to hear a race. After too many horse injuries to count, I am a lot slower then I used to be. lol

10-4 Cajun, you know me, just messing with you!! Your reputation is stellar, as well as your experience!  I to could care less if I catch another hog, I do it for the love of the outdoors and the dogs!! Get more enjoyment from taking people out who do not have dogs and want to try it out!! Would like to have that Big Red Honda 3 wheeler now!! Loved riding those bikes around, dangerous, but lots of fun!! Be good, and good luck this bear season!!
WayOutWest. Good for you buddy!! Keep it up my friend, there will come a day that what we use to do, we will no longer be able to do!! The wonderful cycle of life!!

my first choice in dogs are mt cur...but I did not want to waste time finding a good line so I bred in a line of bear/hog bred plotts to the mix...and maybe add some more pit to the mix or maybe the right line of Florida cur...but we like to let the dogs do the leg work and we do the riding as close as we can...today the dogs put in the miles and we only had to walk in 100 yards to tie a good one...I hate to own a dog that makes me walk 5-7 miles to put him on a hog...lol

Rueben. If you think we are walking are dogs to hogs your confused!! We are trying to stay up with them as they hunt up the hogs! No different then you sitting in the truck following your dogs! Your more then welcome to come down and see the dogs hunt, but you better be able to cover some ground on your feet!!

My father fought in Nam, he was a Ranger and LURP. Whats funny is he never talks about the war but when I was little he used to give me all of his medals he won to play with. He was always bitter about how he thought the country treated the Nam vets.

I agree with you wayout good to see they get some positive recognition.

lots of the Vietnam vets were left as the unforgotten...I knew quite a few that came back and are/were never the same...some drank and/or drugged themselves to death...no telling what they saw or had to deal with in that Jungle...it was a long long war...seems that is all I remember growing up...

My grandpa is a Vietnam vet. He went through twice. He won't talk about it much but the story I get from family is he went through twice because his little brother got drafted as infantry. By this time my papa was already pretty high ranking so he pulled some strings and got them to leave his brother at home. His brother is still pretty bitter about that, but as infantry in nam it quite possibly saved his life.

I wish I was still in my 60s because I am 71. There is not alternative other than pushing up daises. Things just take a little longer than they used to.

Recently I had my right knee replaced because I was bone on bone. It came from a injury back in 73 to my knee.

I remember my cousins philosophy on life back in 1960. He said that if you could clear 100.00$ per week you had it made in the shade. He was right because a car note was just a little over 50.00$ and a 3 bedroom brick house note was about 85.00$ per month. I bought a Ford Ranger pickup (loaded) in 1972 for 3,652.00. I bought a Ranger bass boat in 1971 for 2,370.95. A Remington 700 BDL 7 mag was 106.00 in 1967 and a Remington 1100 3" mag was 115.00 in 1968. I bought a Ruger single 6 22 in 1962 for 62.00, a Springfield 1911 45 in 80 for 300.00, and a Cold Python in the early 80s for 300.00.

One of the things that I will never forget is when one of my friends came by the house in a 1958 Impala---this was in 1960 and it was like new. I couldn't believe it and asked him how much it cost and he told me 1,800.00. Then I asked him how much his notes were and he told me his dad paid cash for it. I took off running to the house and told my mother "you are not going to believe this--Mr. Clyde paid cash for Don's car". I was as surprised if WW3 started. I simply could not comprehend the idea that somebody had enough money to pay cash for a car.

picking cotton in the mid 1960's paid 1 dollar a hundred pounds...took me all day to pick a hundred pounds if I were getting paid...but I worked for my dad so I didn't get paid...
