Title: How can you train a pup to be a good strike dog?
Post by: oklahoma hogger on October 05, 2009, 09:23:55 pm
Right now my pup is only 6 weeks but i would like to know how you guys train your pups/dogs to find hogs?

And another thing how do you train your bay dogs to catch when you say "catch"?

Take them with experienced dogs(finds hogs, no trash) and keep putting them on hog after hog after hog. and the rest is up to them whether their gonna hunt or sit at your feet.

not exactly saying take them on guaranteed hunts but just with dogs that ain't gonna trash because thats gonna teach a pup to trash(even more than it already will)

What Clint said is very true.  You have got to keep 'em in the woods, but make sure they hunt with the kind of dogs you want them to be.

first off not all dogs will make or can be made into a shure enough good strike dog and i would asume thats what you want ?

is if your looking for a really good find dog..      start with 5 pups and keep picking the top dog

as well as hunting them with good dogs, timing has alot to do with training these oklahoma dogs, cause you might not see a hog for 4 or 5 hunts, i dont care how good your old dogs are..
if your lucky enough to hit hogs 5 or 6 times in a row that dog will advace alot faster..

every dog is a little different and you start with a few pups and pick the one you like..

if you just got one pup your odds of finding one that stands out are alot slimmer.

I start a pups training at about 8 weeks old. Put them in a small pen with a small pig and watch what happens. Dont expect much the first few times this can take months and do not allow the pig to hurt the pup no matter what. Repeat this until you have them baying the pig up. You then can start some drags to see how well the pup can track. Like I said before dont expect much at the start. Start out with small 10 yard tracks and move out as the pups learns what you want. You will probably have to help the pup out to find the tied up pig. Normally these first 2 steps take a pup about 6 to 9 months to get the idea. After the pup has passed these 2 training excersizes you will need to find a small wooded pen and again a pig that isnt much bigger than the pup. as the pup gets better at finding and baying the pig up start using a little bit bigger pig until they can handle what ever you put them on. Once the pup passes this training normally at about 1 year old you can start running the pup with a dog that is what you are looking for.

The most important thing I have found with training pups is do not let them get board with what you are doing. It is better to take them away wanting more than to let them get off track.

If you can not get the pup interested in a pig you can always use another pup or dog to get them going.

yeh , if i keep a litter of pups i just take one at a time with the older dogs , i haul them with the older dog to get them to buddy up and follow the old dog thru the woods.

what everyone else said x10
As for as a bay dog catching on command.................never seen one do that, never owned one that would, and dont want a bay dog that will catch on command.

It has more to do with breeding a good strike dog than training one. The truly good ones just need to be hauled and hunted.
If your pup has the breeding then follow the advice already posted by others in this thread.
