Title: The Texas Lacy Post by: Stumphunter on January 14, 2016, 11:59:23 pm As you guys know I hunt with Slim, although he posts on the forum more often than me, he and I still have the same passion for hunting hogs with dogs. We are in the process of culling some dogs and I'm looking into getting a Lacy. I've been around them all my life as cattle dogs and I know they are super intelligent and energetic. What I don't know about is how much bottom do they generally have? Nose? And what's the easiest way to go about training one? I've heard/read they are generally rougher dogs, but how rough? Any past dogs stories or information is greatly appreciated. I know not all dogs of the same breeds are photocopies, I just want to get a general idea before I buy a pup.

Title: Re: The Texas Lacy Post by: Judge peel on January 15, 2016, 09:15:00 am My best dog is Lacy x mnt cur by far the best dog I have ever had or hunted behind very good nose very good bottom and energy for days but smart don't waste energy when there is nothing around. He can be moody around new dogs that mess with him very good handle tho. And fast as all get out

But at the same time will bay a heard has done it many times. I wouldn't hesitate to get one from good breeder but they can be pricey

The way I work though they stay in the kennel about 38 days and then get hunted about 28, and repeated like that thru out the year while deer season is closed.
Anyway it could've been me or it could've been the lacy's I tried. We had just caught one and she rolled off went about 800 and sounded off. Got in there and she had this sow sat down

I feel like she's bigger than a lot of other lacy dogs I've seen. All I know is she can run like the wind and she's got a pretty solid nose from what I've gathered. I'm excited to see what she makes in another year or 2

I could have sworn Chris said she was young and with the way she hunts and how it seems like she still getting the hang of things I just assumed she was young.... Nope, not the case at all. She just wasn't started when Chris got her as a grown dog and she's only been on hogs for a year or 2. I'm currently trippin

If she takes a track and runs it farther than about 300 yards. She's gonna run it until there's a pig at the end. I still think she has a lot of room to get better but she's already probably the second best dog I have besides my lady gyp and both them dogs came from my buddy Chris.

Nice to see some good ones out there, I had one that was half BMC that I had high hopes for but he ended up being a horrible poop stomper, I could not figure out how to break him of that habit

But I've never heard a reason why. I wonder if it has to do with how slow starting and hard headed these dogs are? Or at least Bella is. What kind of temperament does trixy have blastin? And what about flash there peel? Bella is a grouch. Not dog aggressive but she doesn't put up with other dogs who don't have manners. And I have to get pretty aggressive to get her to roll off a hog in the woods. But one I throw it in the bed of the mule or truck, even still alive she won't mess with it, but on the ground or In the woods you gotta lead her away from it a good ways.

When he was younger he could be a little moody but not much any more. He ain't much teeth left he might not fair to good in a dog fight lol. He will ride in the seat next to me in the truck eat biscuits and gravy at whatabuger in the drive thru lol

Acts right and at 4 months old bayed a decent sow I turned loose in a pasture for over an hour. I think Poncho is gonna be my shotgun rider, let him come eat whataburger with me!

I have 2 females and a male lacy. They are all good with each other and other dogs. While the are hyper they are easy to handle and super smart. They pick up on things quickly and have a ton of drive. All 3 from different lines. Ive been really happy with them.

Title: Re: The Texas Lacy Post by: skmarcus on January 21, 2016, 07:38:23 pm Thanks... He is King. The girls are Rhythm and Foxy. Rhythm is the blue and my first. Bought her for my son. Smartest dog Ive owned. She has fetched birds, and trailed a shot hog for me at 8 months. She got me hooked on the lacys
Title: Re: The Texas Lacy Post by: skmarcus on January 22, 2016, 06:02:07 am The red dog came from Bleed Blue Kennels lines, has some brooks in her. King is from Piney Woods lacys, not sure of the lines off the top of my head but they have some great dogs. The blue female is more of a back yard breeding. House dog and a coon hunting male... But it clicked! She has lots of drive and like I said she is the smartest dog I have.

The guy that owned her did not take care of his dogs and she was real skinny. I wormed her real good and put some good high quality dog food in her and she started looking good. In fact some of the guys that had hunted with the previous owner did not even recognize the dog.
She was pretty gritty, a good strike dog, and a good bay dog. When I first got her she was starved so bad she would really jump on any dog that got close to her food. She got out of that later. I kept her until she died and I really don't know how old she was but my guess was about 15. |
