Title: Catch dog Jaw Muscle Cramp?????? Post by: buckNboar on February 06, 2016, 09:10:42 pm Any experiences?? My Dogo caught a good sow today and after I caught and tied hog the Dogo could barely open his mouth. All the dogs were hot and he could barely open his mouth enough for his tounge to stick out. I checked it good. Couldn't find any poke's, no broke teeth, jaw is still aligned, feels normal. His cheek/jaw muscles are huge and hard as a rock. I had to pry his mouth open some so he could breathe. Any ideas or experiences?

He's eating and drinking so I don't feel it's "life threatning" at the moment. If it's not better by Monday I'll take him to vet. Thanks for a quick response slim

Post by: Black Streak on February 07, 2016, 09:01:14 am Dogs are not prone to get tetanus but from what I remember, lock jaw is a symptom. Highly doubt it's such a thing as tetanus but then again, I've not heard of your perdicument either. I would treat the muscles same as if the dog was human. Apply some heat for ten minutes or so to the jaw muscles, then apply inward pressure with your thumb to stretch the muscle out same way a messeure would work out a knot in your muscle ( ten min of this won't be near long enough messeure will work on a knot for a while) and then see if the dog has much better movement of its jaw. May need to repeat couple times a day if thus is working and doesn't fix it on the initial session. If this doesn't help, I'd start calling and talking to vets to try to find one who is competent in this area and can solve your problem instead of going to the local vet and have them guess as to the problem and how to solve.

Title: Re: Catch dog Jaw Muscle Cramp?????? Post by: buckNboar on February 08, 2016, 07:38:25 pm Just an update.... It's been over 48hrs and the swelling has went down. He uses his mouth more and seems to feel better. He don't mind shaking his head this evening. Guess it was just a cramp or pulled muscle. He shouldn't be dehydrated. This was the 1st hunt in 4-5 months because of deer season. He has a 5gal bucket of water in his kennel as well. Skin of his neck shows no sign of dehydration. I tried to get the wife to go message his jaw muscles but........ I'll try him this weekend if he keeps improving. It's been a weird scenario but looks like it no big deal
Title: Re: Catch dog Jaw Muscle Cramp?????? Post by: Amokabs on February 08, 2016, 08:02:01 pm I wonder if he pulled a muscle, been sitting up a while. Then back to action on a good hog, may have to get him to stretch before his next hunt!

I'm leaning towards a very hard strain and a pulled muscle. Amokabs you are probably right, it's gotta be tough on them straight out of the gate after 4-5 months off.
