The mountain curs are all Nickelson bred dogs. The Black and Tan BMC is Bruno bred. The oj dog is Ben Jordan BMC and sizzling heat bred plott. Bred from a close friend of mine. Good stock

Thank you. He's definitely the biggest dog here. Ironically he's also the least rough. Has good nose and good range.

Judge if you ever find your way to the show me state we can plan a hunt. I think you hunt similarly. Is there anyone in your parts running mountain curs?

I been hunting these hills most my life and I still haven't gotten used to em lol. There's swamp and marsh further south but it all has its own evils. The pigs are quick as deer and fight like a double headed badger in the hill country.

Thank you gentlemen. And in response to your question about open or tight mouthed. For the most part they are silent but a couple will open on a hot track. Havnt seen a difference in the effect it has on hogs.  Hopefully I don't seem arrogant or like I'm boasting but the oj dog is the first good dog I've owned and we been through a lot of dogs. All of the dogs I got with no experience in hogs. A lot of people told us we'd never have good dogs without hunting with experienced dogs. After a couple years we catch hogs religiously. I'm very proud. I can't say we did it fully on our own. I do feel like starting from nothing and watching the dream come Alive I have learned more than I ever could just buying finished dogs. I remember the first hog we caught and trying to hold years back with the thought of so many telling us it'd never happen. These dogs mean a lot to me. Thank y'all for the kindness

nice looling dogs...I like the looks of your OJ dog...about 4 years ago I almost bought a Niclelson Bred Mt cur myself after reading so many good comments on his dogs...I backed out because his stud dog looked kind of short and a little too stocky for what I was looking for...Talking with him I really liked his way of breeding and selecting dogs to his liking...I wish there were many more breeders with his style...I am a big fan of the OMC...the right ones can be pretty awesome...

starting from scratch can be easy when starting out with a good line of dogs...finding the right dogs can be the tricky problem...

we can be sitting on start for many many years if we don't have the right dogs...

Reuben. Darrel is a good friend of mine. His son and I hunt together. He's a true dog man. Hunts every day. His dogs are short and stocky. Very rough and will catch anything. He also has a stud dog who is taller and more lean. Hoss came from him. Haggard and buster are out of the shorter stockier stud dog. The oj dog was bred by darron Hildebrand also a good friend and true dog man. Very respectable hog hunter here in Missouri.

I never count out a short dog it's the hunt in the dog not the size of his legs

Judge...you are right but I like all the equipment to balance out along with the hunt in the dog...

CMW...when I talked with Darrel he told me about both stud dogs...he liked his shorter dog because of his hunt and grit...I could tell by how he talked that he was one of the few dog breeders I agree with on how they judge and breed dogs...

Agreed judge. And Reuben Darrel is honest and straightforward as they come. His dogs will go until they die. Hoss definitely has the range and nose but not near as rough as the other 2.

For the most part. A saddleback here and there. Some with a little more white. Very fast dogs. The rougher dogs are certainly faster but less range from my experience. We walk hunt so a dog that gets out 4-500 yards at most fits us best.

He breeds for squirrel and coon but they have been hell on hogs since we gave them a shot. Darrel only hunts squirrel and coon. He has Gamey dogs. No doubt they will get after what you push them towards.

these dogs of mine are mixed as all curdogs are but I have line bred them so long they show more mountain cur look to me than anything else ........(https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/13882426_1365904723436826_4240449030834601529_n.jpg?oh=d58185f3e2a8e7f06ede54e08423b222&oe=58D0FB22)

Them tree dogs will make good hog dogs in most cases. Tree dog x stock dogs will make good dogs if done right

if the dog will kill a big boar coon one on one then it has what it takes to do what I want as a hog dog...I have used them since the late 80's and they tend to make excellent dogs...they can start out trashy as most gamey dogs will but with proper handling it won't be as hard to break...

Hope you don't mind me asking Reuben but how do your dogs hunt. Short, long. Loose or rough.

Title: Re: Some of the pack
Post by: Reuben on November 10, 2016, 09:12:58 pm
They are all around...start out close and range out until they find a track or wind one...some are gritty but have wised up more than I like...more grit would shorten the races...

My old pack of dogs were quite a bit better because I bred them for quite a few generations and selected for range, winding, trailing and the ability to find game...I bred for what we expect from a good cur...the right selection is key...

Sounds like they would be a pleasure to hunt behind. If anyone is interested in talking with Darrel about a pup or want to see how his dogs hunt. I would be happy to help.

my old blackie dog in the picture with me as a three way cross half mountain cur  1/4 ladner / 1/4 Catahoula ......his daddy as full his momma as half ladner half cat ....I bred him to two brindle cowstock female and what I have  now 25 years  later come from those breedings .......  depending on how I train them and pair them some  is  perty long ranged  some 600 to 700 yards loops .... we wind a lot of the hogs we find from the boat or buggy ....

I will be shopping for a top female down the road...he and 2 other breeders I have in mind to talk to about finding and buying one...If I am correct Darrell's dogs go back to the busher mt curs...
